A Commando unit has killed 15 al-Shabaab fighters in the central Somalia region of Galgadud, on Wednesday night, May 11.
The commando unit, which is part of the Somali National Army, had been pursuing the militants before the confrontation.
Among the 15 militants killed, were three senior al-Shabaab commanders according to a Somali government official.
“Three senior Al Shabaab commanders were among those killed in the attack on El Timir village, near the coastal town of Galcad,” said DistrictCommissioner Qadar Mohamud Ali.
Al-Shabaab spokesman Abdulaziz Abu Musab, said his group had foiled an attack by American forces but did not comment on the killing of his fighters.
The Somali commando assault on the terror group, comes after al-Shabaab hadlaunched suicide car bomb attack on police headquarters in Mogadishu.
The suicide attack claimed the lives of four people including two traffic police officers.
The commando unit involved in eliminating the al-Shabaab militants were trained in the United Arab Emirates.
Somalia once had one of Africa’s largest military forces under former dictator Siad Barre, who was overthrown in 1991.
Somalia’s national army has suffered due to the civil war between clans in the country and lack of a stable central government.
