9 Ways Mobile is Moving into Academia

[del.icio.us] [Digg] [Facebook] [Mixx] [Reddit] [StumbleUpon] [Twitter] [Email]

Mobile phones are ubiquitous among students, both in college and K-12. And while some schools shun the use of cell phones, others are embracing them as a powerful tool. Marketing, learning, and mobile access are just some of the ways academia is taking advantage of what mobile has to offer. Read on, and we’ll take a look at nine interesting ways that mobile devices are making their way into academia.

  1. Expanding university apps and mobile web

Universities around the world have learned the value of mobile devices, publishing iPhone and Android apps, mobile-optimized sites, and more, that have allowed students and visitors to find campus news, maps, and other helpful resources right in their phones. Colleges that made a big step into using Blackboard for class organization and participation have taken another step, often embracing mobile Blackboard functionality as well. Apps, like the one from Brandeis University, make it easy to get emergency help in a flash, or just find information from the campus library. Others, including Princeton‘s app, allow access to the university’s iTunesU, which shares lectures, videos, and more. Students can even access the school’s course catalog within the app.
  2. Nomadic learning

According to GigaOm, mobile is the key to education anywhere. The beauty of learning everywhere is that students can learn outside of the classroom, not having to worry about the world going on without them while they’re locked up inside. Rather, they are out there participating, all the while consuming information and learning as they go. Podcasted classes, real-time scavenger hunts, and mobile games are all great examples of learning on-the-go that can be created by traditional educators, and employed by otherwise traditional students. Through mobile education, teaching doesn’t have to end in the classroom, and GigaOm believes that mobile can really shine through teaching and learning.
  3. Augmented reality learning scenarios

Mobile phones make it possible to learn anywhere, but with augmented reality learning scenarios, students can really learn anywhere and even any time. Going beyond convenience, through augmented reality mobile technology on GPS-enabled handheld devices, students can find information from different locations outdoors, like on a playground or school field. For elementary school students, this might mean a game like Buffalo Hunt, where students can track buffalo for a fictional American Indian tribe, bringing them back into history in a way that is tangible, real, and fun. By approaching targets, students will trigger narrative text, video, audio, and other curriculum that helps them add to their knowledge of American Indian tribes.
  4. Mobile apps for education

Although overall mobile apps have a long way to go in classroom education, they are making great progress. Apps that allow students to explore constellations, for example, offer a great way to interact in the classroom. And while some mobile apps may have students somewhat closed off from the class and their teachers, some do offer integrative learning. Through EdApp Certification from LanSchool Technologies, app makers can give teachers a code that enables control of classroom mobile devices while students are using the app. Through these and other apps, teachers are increasingly learning how to use apps as a teaching tool that reinforces what’s being done in the classroom.
  5. Twitter feedback in class

In large classrooms, it is logistically impossible for every student to participate, even if it’s just for a moment. But through Twitter, lecture halls full of hundreds of students can all participate at the same time, tweeting comments, questions, and more using their laptops and cell phones. TAs and professors can respond to the real-time feed, and the entire classroom can watch as it goes by. Students enjoy being able to overcome the shyness barrier, and the entire classroom benefits from increased participation. According to Mashable, studies overwhelmingly indicate that more participation in class means better academic performance, motivation, and the confidence to share different points of view.

  1. Mobile library access

For years, the only way to access academic libraries was to physically make your way down there and get familiar with the stacks. With the Internet, that’s changed, allowing students and researchers to log in from any computer and enjoy many of the resources that libraries have to offer. But with mobile devices, the game is further changed, allowing for the use of eBooks in academic reading, mobile library database access, and simple library notifications. Where the Internet has allowed students to access the library from anywhere with a computer, mobile library access makes it possible for students to use library resources from literally anywhere, right from the palm of their hand. Granted, most students prefer to do heavy research on a computer or physically in the library, but, researchers say, there is a positive trend toward using databases and resources to find quick information and materials.
  2. Mobile phone payments

Anyone who’s tried to get lunch during the afternoon rush on a college campus can tell you that things get a little crazy, especially when it comes to paying for food. With mobile devices, schools have the opportunity to streamline the process, using phones to buy food and beverages through secure transactions. Mobile payments can move lines more quickly, and even more impressive, they allow students to check their spending, history, and even reload their account. The University of Denver has begun to use a mobile payment system, Mocapay, for their school coffee shop, Beans. In addition to payments, Mocapay allows Beans to use the platform’s messaging engine for mobile marketing campaigns that target students.
  3. Mobile marketing

To be a good marketer, you’ve got to go where your target market is, and for colleges, their target market is on cell phones. Research from Ball State University indicates that 97% of all U.S. college students own a cell phone. The University of Louisville and other colleges have capitalized on this opportunity, using QR codes, SMS marketing, and the aforementioned mobile apps to connect with prospective students. For the University of Louisville, mobile marketing has proved particularly valuable because their prospective students typically don’t check email regularly, but they will pay attention to their phones. They share information about campus visits, deadlines, and more to stay connected and get responses from students.
  4. Mobile pop quizzes

Student response systems, which allow teachers to get digital answers from students in their class, usually cost about $1,200 for each classroom. But by using existing student cell phones, that price tag is quickly slashed to just $50 a year. Through programs like Poll Everywhere and Mobile Messenger, teachers can leverage educational SMS programs to perform flash quizzes in class. In addition to quizzes, teachers are able to use cell phones for testing, homework assignments, and more, encouraging students to educationally engage with their phones instead of using them as a distraction.

10 Coolest Technologies of Cars of the Future

by admin on January 1, 2012
In our wildest dreams, we probably imagine ourselves traveling by bubble or transporter in the future. Of course, we'll all be wearing silver spandex and communicating telepathically, too, so maybe it's a blessing that the future hasn't become a reality yet. There are much cooler technologies just around the bend for our vehicles, though; some are even being used in a limited number of cars already. Keep your eyes open in the coming years for these awesome additions to the way we travel.
  1. Compressed-air cars

Making cars cleaner and more fuel-efficient seems to be higher up on companies' agendas than, say, making vehicles fly or giving us in-car blow-dryers and vending machines. While a dashboard microwave would be cool, saving money on gas while not worrying about your car running out of fuel would be just as awesome. There are still plenty of kinks to be worked out of the idea before being marketable, but many are looking at compressed air as a promising fuel source. Cars would use the same compressed air that you put in your tires, releasing less CO2 and saving drivers money. As it is, air pumps would probably need to be stronger and the range is relatively short, but scientists are working hard to find a way to make air work.
  2. Platoons

Nothing is more frustrating than the constant stopping and starting of rush-hour traffic or seeing a light turn green and the cars in front of you not moving until the light's already yellow. Waiting for drivers to react, especially when you're in a long line of vehicles, isn't just infuriating; it's also inefficient. You waste gas because of the air resistance — if you were able to safely drive closer to the car in front of you, you'd use less gas, which is the logic race car drivers and cyclists use when drafting behind another car. Platoons would allow cars to join a sort of caravan where the cars systems would link to that of a lead vehicle, taking the driving responsibilities away from the drivers in the platoon. All the cars would accelerate and brake together and could travel with only a few feet between them because you don't have to account for human reaction time. The idea would also speed up the flow of traffic since you wouldn't have to wait for individual drivers to move, but groups of as many as 25 vehicles.
  3. Wireless charging stations

Electric cars are starting to gain some traction in the consumer market, but most developers know they won't fully catch on until they can match the convenience and range of gas-driven vehicles. Most people hate the idea of having to plug in their car every night or risk breaking down on the side of the road the next day. It's hard enough to remember to plug in your phone; hooking up your car to your house is too much for a lot of people. That's why researchers are finding ways to charge electric cars wirelessly. By parking over a charging pad, cars will be able receive 3.3 kW of power without ever having to be plugged into the wall.
  4. Vehicle Infrastructure Integration

When we're driving, most of us aren't trying to communicate with the road or other people's cars. We're swearing and yelling at the driver who just cut us off or waving at the person who just let us merge in heavy traffic. But what if our cars were communicating too? Vehicle Infrastructure Integration is a big idea that is being researched a lot lately to try to figure out the best ways to implement it and form laws to use it best. VII would make it possible for vehicles to communicate with each other so each car would have information like how fast a nearby car is going, the intentions of the driver, and where exactly they're located to improve safety by braking or steering when needed. Each car would also communicate with the road, giving driving and traffic conditions to drivers.
  5. Self-parking systems

It won't be long until all cars can park themselves — many manufacturers have even added the feature in the past year. The dreaded task of parallel parking won't even be an issue as cars take control in parking situations. All a driver has to do is pull up alongside a suitable parking spot (those tiny spots won't work with the current technology) and let the system do the work. Some possible self-parking devices will even help you find a parking spot so you won't have to circle the block or parking lot 20 times waiting for someone to leave.
  6. Bodies of batteries

One of the current stumbling blocks for electric car design is the problem of the battery. Big, bulky batteries are more powerful, but weigh the car down. Lighter batteries won't take the car as far, so they don't make much sense to developers. One solution that is being researched is the idea of working the battery into the body of the car. Since the body has to be there anyway, you might as well make the most use out of every inch. The doors, roof, and hood would act as the battery, doing many of the best things that more traditional batteries do, like regenerative braking and storing a charge.
  7. Pre-safe systems

This is another system that is being used in one or two cars already, but is destined to become standard in cars of the future. Pre-safe systems, like that of the Mercedes Benz, are able to detect how far the car is from a vehicle or object in front of it. When it gets information that the vehicle is about to be involved in a crash, it braces the driver for impact. First, it gives a visual and auditory warning to the driver so he'll react if possible, and then it tightens the driver's seatbelt and moves his seat to a position that will keep injuries to a minimum. This is the next generation of car safety; cars won't just protect the passengers, they'll keep some crashes from happening.
  8. Personal rapid transit

OK, this isn't exactly a car of the future. It's more like an overhaul of transportation. With personal rapid transit, we wouldn't have to drive to destinations anymore. Instead, we'd take something you might compare to automated taxis — somewhere between a personal vehicle and a train. Groups of four to six people would take a small car that wouldn't have to stop at any stations on the way to their destination. They'd be connected to guideways somehow, but there would be many more routes that could be taken than with a traditional train. There aren't any personal rapid transit systems in the U.S. right now, but Heathrow Airport in London and a district in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates are trying the idea.
  9. Foam bodies

Today, we think of cars as heavy steel cages, but that doesn't mean they will always be that way. Foam or other plastics might offer a safer, lighter way for us to travel. In Thailand, where motorcycles and scooters are common forms of transportation, one company tried the foam idea on an enclosed, two-person car. The body is 90% foam, reinforced with aluminum and fiberglass, and only weighs 300 pounds. The six inches of foam on all sides had impressive results in the companies' tests where they crashed it into a four-ton truck. And just like those foam noodles you use in your pool, foam could keep cars afloat if you drive into water.
  10. Hydrogen fuel cells

One the most promising sources of clean energy for cars of the future is hydrogen. By using a fuel cell, hydrogen is converted into electricity that can be used as power and the only byproducts are heat and water, meaning no pollutants. NASA already uses hydrogen power to launch shuttles, but we're still several years away from seeing it become a part of our everyday lives. Hydrogen may be abundant on Earth, but it has to be separated from other elements when taken from water or natural gas. This is one of the main kinks that has to be worked out before making a hydrogen car marketable. The question remains whether there would be hydrogen refueling stations, a fuel converter built in the car, or miniature hydrogen plants in home garages.

More than 20 feared dead in Kenyan boat crash

LAMU, Kenya | Mon Jan 2, 2012 7:36am EST
LAMU, Kenya (Reuters) - More than 20 people were feared dead after a Kenyan ferry carrying more than 80 passengers capsized on Sunday night following a collision with a cargo boat off the island of Lamu, a popular tourist destination.Survivors confirmed earlier suggestions that the small ferry was overloaded when the two vessels collided in the dark at about 9 p.m. (1800 GMT).
The Kenya Red Cross said of the 82 passengers, seven were confirmed dead as of Sunday night, 25 had been rescued and 23 managed to swim to shore. Fifteen people pulled from the water were admitted to hospital.
Abdalla Miraj, regional head of the Kenya Red Cross, told Reuters at least 16 people were still believed missing.
"We have stopped diving now because we have been told that after 24 hours the bodies will float to the surface, so at around 8 p.m. we will all go out again and try to collect the rest," he said.
Speedboats scoured the channel separating Lamu Island from the mainland. One police boat carried the body of a victim under a white patterned sheet.
The ferry had just left Lamu at the time of the collision. The other vessel was carrying oil drums.
A Lamu resident said the small ferries can typically take up to about 50 passengers, but survivors said the boat was overloaded with people and baggage. Kenyans flock to the Indian Ocean coast over Christmas and New Year for holidays.
"Soon after leaving it hit another vessel and water started flowing in. I was on it with my three children and wife and luckily we were all saved," said survivor Ali Bakari.
"The boat itself was overloaded. Before it left there was a police officer who tried to stop it leaving, but the operator talked him out of it," Bakari told Reuters at the hospital, adding that neither vessel appeared to have lights.
"All we heard was the impact," he said.
Locals lamented the fact a new water ambulance equipped with first aid facilities and oxygen tanks, donated to Kenya by an international donor, had remained moored throughout the rescue.
"There's a brand new ambulance boat with new engines but no one can use it because there is no driver and no petrol," said resident Mohamed Ali. "It has never been used because the government won't put the money towards using it. It's another tragedy for Lamu," he said.
A British tourist was shot dead and his wife kidnapped by gunmen from a beach resort north of Lamu in September. The wife is still being held hostage in Somalia. In October, gunmen seized a French woman from Lamu. She later died in Somalia.
Overloading was blamed for another ferry disaster off the Indian Ocean coast in neighbouring Tanzania in September. More than 200 people died when the MV Spice Islander sank as it sailed from Zanzibar to Pemba island.

Ethiopia-ONLF: The 2012 expected peace negotiations

Ethiopia-ONLF: The 2012 expected
peace negotiations
By Abdikarim H. Abdi Buh
Jan 01 , 2012

“Anyone can give up; it’s the easiest thing in the world to do. But to hold it together
when everyone else would understand if you fell apart, that’s true strength
.“
By anonymous sage.
The students of Ethiopian politics perceive the forth coming peace talks between the ONLF (Ogaden National Liberation Front) and the Ethiopian Government as one of the toughest talks ever entertained by any Ethiopian government. Even though the peace talks weren’t officially proclaimed by the concerned parties, yet there is reliable information to that effect from trustworthy sources that the Ethiopian government informed formally the Kenyan government that it wants to talk to the ONLF in the presence of a third party. The ONLF all the way through its history was maintaining that they are willing to talk to the Ethiopian government, in a neutral country, provided Ethiopia accepts the presence of a third party to witness the progress of the talks.

http://somaliswiss.files.wordpress.com/2009/10/onlf-leader-admiral-mohamed-omar-osman.jpg?w=220&h=228&h=190The Kenyan government received the acceptance of the ONLF without a delay since it was the government of Ethiopia not the ONLF that was dragging its feet for so long from taking the offer of peace talks in the hope that it will wipe out the ONLF through brute military force. The Somali Region’s (Ogaden region) resistance to occupation stretches over a century and the region was and is a battle field between successive Ethiopian governments and national liberation forces. The region has been treated by the Ethiopian governments over the years as a buffer zone and its citizens as strangers that have no right in Ethiopia.

Ethiopia through its choice tool, military option, to address the genuine occupation question of the Somali region (Ogaden Region) made the region the least developed region in Ethiopia. Substantial number of its citizens grew up in refugee camps or in neighbouring countries for the third generation and whatever left behind either move from one IDP camp to the next at best or loiters in concentration camps called military prisons that are spread throughout the region at worst.

Map of EthiopiaHuman rights organisation’s yearly and daily reports consistently highlight the atrocities and human rights abuses meted against the region by the security forces of Ethiopia. The region is categorized and recognised as famine prone by the international development agencies and yet in pursuit of its military option the Ethiopian government sealed the boarders Ethiopia's starvation strategy of the region from all sides and pronounced it  as no go area for international aid agencies, independent reporters  and the likes. The Gaza- like status, open prison, is effective to this day and among the latest casualties of the notorious anti terrorist bill are the two Swedish journalists who ventured into the region on a fact finding mission -   Ethiopia Jails Swedish Journalists

The people of the region have never been allowed to elect their representatives even at village level let alone at regional level. Since the region is garrison town under perpetual emergency rule, the army hand picks their young informers and crowns them to high offices. The educated and the elite of the region, who grow up in exile through fault of not theirs, were barred from running for public office and thus under - thirty year olds with no experience but loyalty to their appointed Tigrean masters are at the helm of the region.

Meles ZenawiThe reigning Ethiopian government, under premier Zenawi, which the ONLF has to negotiate with, is an authoritarian state that has no tolerance for pluralistic views in any shape or form. The politics, military and the economy of Ethiopia is dominated by his TPLF/EPRDF party which claimed that it won 99.6% of the latest staged election when it is common knowledge that the reality is on the contrary - Total Domination of Ethiopia by Ethnic Tigrean  . The most draconian anti – terrorist laws ever was introduced by his party to criminalise any form of decent, repressive press laws that saw the closure of all the independent media outlets is in place and rubber stamp judiciary that are tasked to dish out lengthy prison sentences that underwrites opposition party officials, journalists, human rights activists and the likes are kept behind bars; works round the clock.

Real peace talks, between Ethiopia and the ONLF, that are pencilled to start soon heralds a glimmer of hope for the Somali Region and the horn of African countries. If the Ethiopian government is sincere about the talks and prepared to negotiate within the framework of the Ethiopian constitution, all signs are that a successful deal is within reach. The core of the talks, from the Ethiopian government’s side, should be aimed Continued

Militants target Kenyan New Year's revellers

Posted January 02, 2012 07:52:46
Gunmen sprayed bullets at New Year revellers in two bars in north-east Kenya on Sunday, killing five people, the latest in a wave of attacks near the border with Somalia.
Kenyan security forces suspect Al Shabaab Islamist rebels, who are fighting the Western-backed government in Somalia, are behind the string of deadly strikes in the border region.
A worker at one of the bars in the town of Garissa said gunmen approached in a vehicle, opened fire and then drove away.
"The guys fired from the vehicle. They first shot the guard, [and then] shot more bullets at those who tried to leave and those who were at the entrance," said the witness who declined to be named.
North Eastern provincial police commander Leo Nyongesa said five people had been confirmed dead.
A medic, who also asked not to be identified, said 28 people had been wounded, including security officers and several women.
"I can see ambulances and the military. Local police have taken two bodies and four people who had gunshot wounds to Garissa general hospital," a photographer at the scene said.
Kenyan forces crossed into Somalia in October to attack the Al Qaeda-linked Al Shabaab militants, whom it blamed for a spate of kidnappings and cross-border attacks on its soil.
Al Shabaab has denied responsibility for the kidnappings and has vowed major retaliation against Kenya.
Kenyan police said on Saturday they were looking for 15 people who they said had information on Al Shabaab.
Last week two grenades were hurled at a club in Wajir-district in north-east Kenya, wounding at least seven people.
Suspected al Shabaab gunmen on Sunday also shot dead a member of a local security committee in the Dadaab refugee camp in northern Kenya, home to more than 400,000 Somalis, Mr Nyongesa said.
The committee, made up of elders and youths in the world's largest refugee camp, helps Kenyan security forces find Al Shabaab militants. Another member of the committee was shot dead on Thursday.
"Al Shabaab has now resorted to intimidating locals, Kenyans and Somali refugees working with us to restore security at all the camps in Dadaab," said Mr Nyongesa.
Shootings and roadside bombs in the Dadaab camp since Kenya sent troops into Somalia have forced many aid agencies to scale down humanitarian operations. Most foreign aid workers have left the camp.

Texas airport: explosives found in man's luggage

Police remove the explosives from Midland International Airport Police removed the explosives from Midland airport in a secure transport box
A man has been detained at an airport in the US state of Texas after he tried to carry explosives through security, officials say.
The man was stopped at Midland International Airport when explosives in military wrapping were found in his carry-on baggage as it went through an X-ray machine.
He is being held by the FBI.
The airport terminal was cleared for checks, but normal operations have now resumed, say Midland city officials.
The FBI is conducting an investigation.
A spokesman declined to say whether the man was in military uniform, or what quantity of explosive he was carrying.
The man said that he was active in the military, according to police sources quoted by local newspapers.
He had reportedly been on a family visit to relatives in the Midland area and was returning to a base in North Carolina when he was detained

Iran 'test-fires medium-range missile' in Gulf

The BBC's Mohsen Asgari reports from Tehran, as pictures from Iranian state TV apparently showed the missile launch
Iran has successfully test-fired a medium-range surface-to-air missile during military exercises in the Gulf, the official Irna news agency reports.
Iranian naval commander, Mahmoud Mousavi, was quoted as saying the missile was equipped with the "latest technology" and "intelligent systems".
The test comes a day after he denied earlier state media reports that Iran had test-fired long-range missiles.
He said on Saturday missile launches would take place "in the coming days".
Iran's 10 days of naval exercises began last week and are taking place in international waters to the east of the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
They come at a time of increased tensions between the West and Iran over its nuclear ambitions.
Tehran reacted angrily last week to reports that Western nations were planning to impose further sanctions targeting Iran's oil and financial sectors.

Iran threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz, which links the Gulf - and its oil-producing states - to the Indian Ocean.
About 20% of the world's traded oil passes through the narrow strait, according to the US Energy Information Administration.
The US and its allies believe Iran is trying to develop nuclear weapons - a charge Iran denies.
Tehran insists its nuclear programme is purely for peaceful purposes. Iran has maintained that it needs nuclear technology to generate electricity to meet growing domestic demand.

A provincial governor in Argentina has died of a gunshot to the head while celebrating the new year with his wife.
Police say the Rio Negro governor, Carlos Soria, was at home when the incident happened, shortly before 05:00 local time (08:00GMT).
His vice-governor, Alberto Weretilneck, who will succeed Mr Soria, described it as a "domestic accident".
Mr Soria's wife, Susana Freidos, is being questioned by police, say local media reports.
The governor was only a few weeks into his tenure, having been sworn in on 10 December 2011.
He was a member of Argentina's governing Peronist party and had been elected in Rio Negro by a wide margin.
Emergency workers called to the house found him bleeding in bed and rushed him to hospital, where he died a short time later.
