Somalia - Wararkii Maanta

Marsh flooding brings new life to Iraq's 'Garden of Eden' By Richard Porter
The lush marshes of Iraq are regarded by some as the original Garden of Eden, but they were drained and decimated by Saddam Hussein. Now a major restoration programme has seen people and wildlife return to one of the world's most famous wetlands.
Ahead of me stretches a channel through the reeds - Phragmites reeds that grow in the marshes near my home in England.
But unlike those at home, these are over 4m tall and seem to reach the sky above me as we gently glide through the avenue of still water they majestically flank.
We are punting in a Mashoof, the common small canoe of the marshes used for centuries for transportation and the collection of reeds.
I am in southern Iraq, in the Marshes of Mesopotamia - the Central Marshes to be precise. It is a paradise for wildlife and home of the Ma'dan, the Marsh Arabs.
Libya: Gaddafi-linked assets worth $1bn 'in South Africa' Many Libyans consider assets held by Muammar Gaddafi's family as state-owned property Continue reading the main story
South African officials are investigating claims ex-Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi and his family stashed $1bn (£600m) in assets in the country.
Libya has reportedly called for help in repatriating diamonds, gold and cash.
The assets were being held by four banks and security companies in South Africa, reports quoting Libyan investigators say.

Some estimates suggest that Gaddafi's total foreign assets could be worth as much as $80bn.
Gaddafi was captured and killed as he tried to flee his home town of Sirte during Libya's political uprising in October 2011.
Any assets belonging to him or his family are firmly considered by many Libyans as state-owned property that should be returned.
"There was a group that approached Treasury claiming to represent the Libyan government and we are in the process of verifying their claims about assets that are in South Africa," a spokesman for South African Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan was quoted as saying by South Africa's Sunday Times newspaper.
Libyan embassy official Salah Marghani said that officials had "been appointed to investigate and secure assets in Africa on behalf of the people of Libya".
The newspaper printed extracts of letters from Libya's justice and finance ministers to their South African counterparts asking for help finding assets linked to Gaddafi, which might "have been illegally possessed, obtained, looted, deposited or hidden in South Africa".
It said Libyan investigators had met Mr Gordhan and President Jacob Zuma to discuss locating and returning the money.
--Syrian rebels and Hezbollah 'exchange fire in Lebanon' Hezbollah has been fighting alongside the Syrian army in the strategically important Syrian town of Qusair
A number of people have been killed in an exchange of fire between Syrian rebels and fighters from the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, say reports.
Lebanese security sources said the clashes took place on Lebanon's side of the border, near the town of Baalbek.
Hezbollah is fighting alongside the army in Syria, but the clashes have rarely crossed onto Lebanese soil.
Meanwhile the Red Cross has said it is alarmed by the worsening situation in the besieged Syrian town of Qusair.
It has appealed for access to the town, which lies just 10km (6 miles) over the Lebanese border.
Thousands of civilians are believed to be trapped as pro-government forces - including Hezbollah fighters - battle rebels.
The office of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon also appealed to the warring parties to allow residents to flee.
Mr Ban telephoned Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem to share his concerns, but was told the Red Cross would be allowed in "as soon as military operations are over", Reuters reports.
Mr Moualem reportedly expressed his surprise at the level of concern over Qusair, saying there had been none when rebels took over the town last year.
Also on Sunday, a car bomb killed nine members of the Syrian security forces in the capital, Damascus, according to the British-based pro-opposition watchdog the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
The watchdog said the bomb had targeted a police station in the eastern district of Jobar, which has seen renewed clashes between government forces and rebels who are entrenched there.

Georgia Williams murder case: Jamie Reynolds remanded

Jamie ReynoldsJamie Reynolds appeared before Telford magistrates
A man charged with the murder of teenager Georgia Williams has been remanded in custody by magistrates.
Police have not confirmed if a girl's body found in woodland near Wrexham on Friday is that of the 17-year-old student from Wellington, Shropshire.
Jamie Reynolds, 22, from Avondale Road, Wellington, appeared before Telford magistrates and is due at Stafford Crown Court on Tuesday.
Georgia's father Steven, a police officer, said she was "a great girl".
'Always here'
Speaking at AFC Telford United's stadium, which was opened earlier to allow her friends and family to pay their respects, he paid tribute to his daughter, saying: "Thank you for being in my life. God bless you."
He added: "I'm holding it together for Georgia. I'd like to thank everybody who's here for coming down and showing their love for Georgia.
"She was into everything.

"Never say she was. Say she is. Talk about her as though she's here and always will be here with us."
The club, where Georgia worked on match days, said it was "devastated".
Her father and mother, Lynette Williams, were joined by more than 100 relatives, friends and well-wishers who gathered at the ground.
Flowers have been left in a designated area at the stadium.
The teenager, who was head girl at her former school, was last seen by her parents on Sunday evening when she told them she was going to meet friends.
Georgia's boyfriend, Matthew Bird, 19, said he would "never forget" her.
He said: "You shouldn't say people are perfect, but she is perfect at the end of the day and she always was to me and she will be.
'Phenomenal support'
"I just want everyone possible to know how much I do love her and I mean that in the deepest part of me and the reason... I'm not getting upset in front of people is... not because I don't care, it's because she wouldn't want me to.
Georgia's father, Steven Williams: ''Georgia, you were a great girl. Thank you for being in my life''
"I've got to really push on with everything and make her proud because that's what she'd want."
Georgia's best friend, Kate Lafferty, 17, was among those at the stadium as friends and well-wishers arrived to leave flowers on the North Stand and write in a book of condolence opened by the club.
Many wept as the football club's anthem Keeping the Dream Alive played.
Mr Bird said: "Today has just been outstanding.
"I can't explain to you how perfect it has been and, take away my feelings, the support everyone has given to her friends and family is phenomenal. I know she would be so proud."
AFC Telford United chairman Lee Carter said: "She was a lovely girl. Very polite and well-mannered. Bright, bubbly and really did make a massive impact on anyone she came in contact with.
"She will be sorely missed."
Police search teams found a girl's body in woodland near Wrexham on Friday. No formal identification has been made.
The discovery was made at about 14:00 BST off the Nant-y-Garth pass in north Wales.
Flowers at AFC Telford United Flowers have been left at AFC Telford United's stadium, where Georgia used to work on match days
Officers want to find a waist-length black leather-type jacket with a stand-up collar that the teenager was wearing on the night she went missing.
They are also keen to trace her distinctive spotty leather satchel, a pink, flowered make-up bag and her white Samsung Galaxy Y mobile phone.
Mr Reynolds, who is accused of murdering Georgia on the day she disappeared, did not speak during his five-minute court hearing.
He was arrested in Glasgow city centre on Wednesday.

Suspected Islamist militants attack Niger prison

Gunmen have attacked the main prison in Niger's capital, Niamey, killing at least two people, officials say.
They are thought to be members of the Islamist militant group, Movement for Unity and Jihad in West Africa (Mujao).
Some of them are reported to have entered the prison, which has been surrounded by security forces.
The attack comes days after Mujao said it was behind suicide bombings at a military base and a French-operated uranium mine which killed 25 people.
Another group affiliated with al-Qaeda, the Signed-in-Blood Battalion of Algerian militant Mokhtar Belmokhtar, later claimed that the assaults in Agadez and Arlit had been joint operations with Mujao.
It also said the attacks were retaliation for Niger's role in the French-led military offensive which drove Mujao and two other Islamist groups out of northern Mali earlier this year.
'Wanted for terrorism'
Residents said the gunmen launched the attack on the prison in Niamey at around 15:00 local time on Saturday.
"We were sitting there when we saw these armed men start to shoot at the guards... I saw several of them fall and not get back up," Ila Yaye, who lives near the prison, told the Reuters news agency.
Muajo fighters near Gao airport in Mali (7 August 2012)Mujao is an al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) splinter group which was formed in mid-2011
Officials told the BBC the incident started when a prisoner grabbed a gun from a guard, and shot dead three guards and a civilian. The prisoner was believed to be a Sudanese member of Mujao.
Members of the group stationed outside the prison then opened fire, the officials said. Some were reported to have entered the building.
Nigerien gendarmes are reported to have later arrived at the prison to help the guards, who remained under fire for around 45 minutes. Police meanwhile blocked off roads leading to the facility.
Later, Niger's Justice Minister, Marou Amadou, said only two guards had been killed and another seriously wounded by four inmates.
Mr Amadou told the Associated Press that the inmates had been captured and the incident was being investigated.
"There are two versions of what happened, and right now we think it's more likely that they came from inside the jail," he added.
"These are people who are wanted for terrorism. We do not know how they were able to arm themselves inside the prison, and how they were able to get out to attack the guards."
Mr Amadou said it was too early to say which group was behind it.
Mujao is a splinter group of al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), which formally announced its existence following the abduction of three aid workers in Algeria in October 2011.
It says its objective is to spread jihad to West Africa rather than confine itself to the Sahel and Maghreb regions - the main focus of AQIM.

Syria conflict: Cleric Qaradawi urges Sunnis to join rebels

Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi (2008)Sheikh Qaradawi has about 60 million followers for his religious programme on al-Jazeera TV
An influential cleric has called on Sunni Muslims from around the Middle East to go to Syria to join the battle against President Bashar al-Assad.
Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi, an Egyptian Islamist based in Qatar, told a rally in Doha that every Sunni capable of fighting should support the rebels.
He also claimed Iran and the Lebanese Shia group Hezbollah, Mr Assad's main allies, wanted to exterminate Sunnis.
His call came as fighting continued for the control of the key town of Qusair.
Rebel-held parts of Qusair, which is situated between Homs and the Lebanese border, are effectively blockaded by government forces and Hezbollah fighters, reports the BBC's Jim Muir in Beirut.
Conditions inside Qusair are said to be dire, especially for civilians and wounded trapped there, our correspondent adds.
Some civilians trying to flee are reported to have been killed. Activists said an entire family of seven were executed at Dabaa, just to the north of Qusair. The report could not be independently verified.
Reinforcements from the Free Syrian Army are reported to have managed to break through from the north-east to support the embattled rebel fighters.
Some Lebanese Sunnis have also crossed into Syria to fight alongside the rebels, who are drawn largely from Syria's majority Sunni community.
'Party of Satan'
Addressing a solidarity rally for Syria in Qatar's capital on Friday evening, Sheikh Qaradawi urged Sunnis throughout the region to follow suit and join the battle.
"Every Muslim trained to fight and capable of doing that [must] make himself available," he said.
"Iran is pushing forward arms and men, so why do we stand idle?"

Sheikh Qaradawi, who has about 60 million followers for his religious programme on al-Jazeera TV, also denounced Hezbollah, whose name means the "Party of God" in Arabic, as the "Party of Satan".
Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah declared a week ago that the group had sent fighters to Syria to assist forces loyal to President Assad, and vowed to fight to the end to defeat the rebellion and defend Lebanon from jihadist extremists.
"The leader of the Party of Satan comes to fight the Sunnis... Now we know what the Iranians want... They want continued massacres to kill Sunnis," Sheikh Qaradawi told the rally.
Our correspondent says the call was a clear sign of how rising sectarianism between Sunnis and Shia threatens to tear the region apart.
The cleric used to be an advocate of rapprochement with the Shia and defended Hezbollah against other Sunni authorities.
Now, he said he regretted that, because he realised that there was no common ground between the two, because the Iranians, especially hardliners, just wanted to "devour" the Sunnis.
The fierce fighting in Qusair and other parts of Syria has raised concerns about the prospects of a peace conference proposed by the United States and Russia.

On Friday, diplomats told the Guardian newspaper that the negotiations on a political solution to the conflict were almost certain not to take place in Geneva in early June as scheduled. They remained hopeful that they would go ahead, probably in July or August.
The main opposition alliance, the National Coalition, has ruled out taking part while civilians are being killed and "in the light of Hezbollah and Iran's militia's invasion of Syria".
US Secretary of State John Kerry meanwhile criticised Russia for agreeing to supply the Syrian military with advanced S-300 missile defence system.
"Whether it's an old contract or not, it has a profoundly negative impact on the balance of interests and the stability of the region," he said.
Russia has itself criticised the European Union's decision to allow its arms embargo on Syria to expire on Saturday to allow weapons to be sent to the opposition.
More than 80,000 people have been killed and 1.5 million have fled Syria since the uprising against Mr Assad began in 2011, according to the UN.

Iraq uncovers al-Qaeda 'chemical weapons plot'

Laboratory equipment and chemicals are seen on display during a news conference at the defence ministry in Baghdad (1 June 2013)The militants allegedly built two facilities to produce sarin and mustard gas
The authorities in Iraq say they have uncovered an al-Qaeda plot to use chemical weapons, as well as to smuggle them to Europe and North America.
Defence ministry spokesman Mohammed al-Askari said five men had been arrested after military intelligence monitored their activities for three months.
Three workshops for manufacturing the chemical agents, including sarin and mustard gas, were uncovered, he added.
Remote-controlled toy planes were also seized at the workshops.
Mr Askari said they were to have been used to release the chemical agents over the target from a "safe" distance of 1.5km (0.9 miles), reports the BBC's Rami Ruhayem in Baghdad.
All of the arrested men had confessed to the plot, and said they had received instruction from another al-Qaeda offshoot, he added.
As the defence ministry spokesman spoke on Iraqi TV, footage was shown of four men with black hoods on their heads, our correspondent adds. Three of them were wearing bright yellow jumpsuits and a fourth was in a brown jumpsuit.
Four men accused of manufacturing chemical weapons are pictured at a news conference in Baghdad (1 June 2013)All of the arrested men have allegedly confessed
Their arrests were possible because of co-operation between Iraqi and foreign intelligence services, Mr Askari said.
Chlorine bombs
Al-Qaeda in Iraq is believed the only offshoot of the Islamist militant network to have used chemical weapons.
It detonated a 16 crude chlorine bombs in Iraq between October 2006 and June 2007.
Chlorine inhalation made many hundreds of people sick, but no deaths resulting from exposure to the chemical were recorded, US officials said at the time. Instead, the bomb blasts are believed to have caused the fatalities.
At the time, US officials said al-Qaeda appeared to want to use debilitating agents like chlorine in their bombs to cause casualties beyond those hit by the initial explosion.
US and Iraqi troops subsequently killed or detained many of the militants who were building the chlorine-laced bombs and seized much of their stockpiled chemicals.
A letter written by the late al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden five days before he was killed in a US military raid in Pakistan in 2011 urged members of the group's offshoot in Yemen who he believed were considering using "poison" to be "careful of doing it without enough study of all aspects, including political and media reaction", according to CNN.

Turkish protesters pack Taksim Square as police withdraw

Thousands of people have been protesting in Istanbul's Taksim Square

Related Stories

Police in the Turkish city of Istanbul have pulled out of a square which has become the focus of the largest anti-government protest in years.
Thousands of people are in Taksim Square after days of unrest sparked by plans to redevelop nearby Gezi Park.
In recent days police have fired tear gas and water cannon several times to break up the demonstrations.
PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan said police may have used excessive force but that the park development will go ahead.
An administrative court had ordered a temporary halt to the demolition work on Friday, but in a defiant speech to the exporters' union on Saturday, Mr Erdogan said an Ottoman era military barracks on the Gezi Park site would be rebuilt on the site as planned.
Referring to protesters fears that the site was destined to be a shopping mall, he said one "might be built on the ground floor or a city museum" but that this had not yet been decided.
He called for an end to the protests, saying Taksim Square "cannot be an area where extremists are running wild".

Turkish media reaction

Murat Yetkin in the pro-secular, English-language daily Hurriyet says the "disproportionate" response of police to the protests "has managed to turn a pacifist and modest protest into a public protest movement".
Ali Bayramoglu, writing in the pro-government Islamist daily Yeni Safak asks how the authorities allowed the situation to get so bad. "If there is a public reaction, why won't it [the government] halt the project, even temporarily, and talk to the protestors?"
In Islamist daily Today's Zaman, Ihsan Yilmaz says that if the government does not listen to the protesters the park issue "may be the last straw and may pave the way for the eventual electoral loss of the city".
Police 'mistakes'
The protesters say the park is one of the few green spaces left in Istanbul, and that the government is ignoring their appeals for it be saved.
Their protests initially began as a sit-in in the park, but erupted in clashes on Friday as police fired tear gas to try to clear them out.
Correspondents say that what was initially a local issue has spiralled into widespread anti-government unrest and anger over the perceived "Islamisation" of Turkey.
One woman told Agence France-Presse: "They want to turn this country into an Islamist state, they want to impose their vision all the while pretending to respect democracy."
Another, Oral Goktas, said the protest had brought together people from many different backgrounds objecting to the prime minister's leadership.
"This has become a protest against the government, against Erdogan taking decisions like a king," she told Reuters news agency.
The perception that police have been heavy-handed by firing tear gas and water cannon - a view adopted by many of the country's mainstream media - also fuelled the unrest. Dozens of people have been injured in the clashes.
Turkey's Hurriyet newspaper quoted police as saying 138 people were in custody.
Mr Erdogan said there had been "some mistakes, extremism in police response", while the authorities have insisted that any allegations of abuse of power by the police will be investigated.
In an apparent bid to reduce tensions, police and riot vehicles were withdrawn from the square on Saturday afternoon, and barricades removed, allowing thousands of people to enter the square.
Protests in Ankara continued into Saturday
The scene in the central square appeared to be peaceful, with protesters chanting slogans, dancing and waving banners, some calling for the government to resign.
However clashes continued in the Besiktas district of the city.
The BBC's Ben Thompson in the city said police were using tear gas and water cannon near the Shangri-la hotel to hold back protesters, who had in turn built a barricade across the main street.
Some people were digging up cobble stones to throw at police lines, our correspondent said.
There were reports of further clashes in front of the prime minister's office.
Foreign concern
Mr Erdogan has been in power since 2002 and some in Turkey have complained that his government is becoming increasingly authoritarian.
His ruling AK Party has its roots in political Islam, but he says he is committed to Turkey's state secularism.
The US has expressed concern over Turkey's handling of the protests and Amnesty International condemned the police's tactics, saying: "The use of violence by police on this scale appears designed to deny the right to peaceful protest altogether and to discourage others from taking part>"
In his speech, Mr Erdogan criticised the "preaching" of foreign governments, saying they "should first look at their own countries".
