Kenyan authorities have launched an investigation into how a man declared dead in a hospital woke up alive in its morgue the next day.

Shocked mortuary workers at Naivasha hospital ran away when the body stirred and was seen to be breathing.

Paul Mutora, who had tried to kill himself by swallowing insecticide, was pronounced dead on Wednesday night.

The chief medic said the drug used to treat him slowed the heart beat, which may have led to the mistake.

"This might have confused medical personnel, but the victim was saved before he could be embalmed," Dr Joseph Mburu, the superintendent in charge of Naivasha District Hospital, was quoted by Kenya's Standard newspaper as saying.

According to the paper, Mr Mutora's father and other relatives visited the morgue on Thursday morning to view the body and then returned home to start funeral arrangements.

"But in the afternoon we were informed, he was alive and were left in shock," the father said.

A witness told the Star newspaper that when noises were heard inside the cold room: "The mortuary attendant and a worker took to their heels screaming."

Journalists photographed Mr Mutora later recovering on a male ward in the hospital in the lakeside town, 90km (55 miles) north-west of the capital, Nairobi,

"This was a mistake from the start and I apologise to my father," the patient said.

Australian man has 2cm cockroach removed from his ear

An Australian man has received medical treatment to remove a large cockroach that had burrowed into his ear.

Local media reported that the 2cm pest caused agonising pain for Hendrik Helmer, and defied his efforts to suck it out with a vacuum cleaner.

It was finally killed by doctors at a hospital in the northern city of Darwin and removed using forceps.

"They said they had never pulled an insect this large out of someone's ear," he told ABC News.

Mr Helmer awoke on Wednesday morning to a sharp pain in his right ear.

At first he thought a poisonous spider had made its way into his ear canal.

When the pain intensified Mr Helmer tried to remove the unwelcome guest with a vacuum cleaner and by squirting water into his ear.

Cockroach facts

  • There are about 4,600 species of cockroach and fewer than 30 of these are considered pests. (By contrast, there are about 5,400 species of mammals)
  • The world's smallest cockroach is only 0.3mm long and lives in ant nests
  • The heaviest cockroach is the huge Australian Rhinoceros Cockroach at 8cm in length

"Whatever was in my ear didn't like it at all," he said.

As the pain become more excruciating, his flatmate rushed him to hospital where a doctor tried putting oil down the ear canal.

But that only made the cockroach crawl in deeper, before it eventually began to die.

"Near the 10 minute mark... somewhere about there, he started to stop burrowing but he was still in the throes of death twitching," Mr Helmer said.

It was then that the doctor was able to put forceps into his ear and and pull out the cockroach.

"She [the doctor] said, 'You know how I said a little cockroach, that may have been an underestimate'," he said.

Mr Helmer told ABC he was not suffering any major discomfort and would not be taking any additional precautions before going to sleep.

But he said his friends were strongly advising him to go to bed with headphones on.

Former football star Ian Redford found dead in woods

Ian Redford Mr Redford signed for Rangers in a then Scottish record fee in 1980

The former Rangers, Dundee and Dundee United player Ian Redford has been found dead in woodland near Irvine in Ayrshire, BBC Scotland understands.

Police Scotland confirmed that a body was found near Long Drive just after 11:00 on Friday.

Officers said there did not appear to be any suspicious circumstances.

Mr Redford, who was 53, began his career with Dundee before joining Rangers in February 1980 for a then Scottish record fee of £210,000.

After six seasons with Rangers, which included four domestic cup trophies, Mr Redford moved to Dundee United, where he collected runners-up medals in the Uefa Cup and Scottish Cup in the space of a few days in 1987.

He also played for Ipswich Town from 1988 to 1991.

CAR interim President Michel Djotodia resigns

The BBC's Mike Wooldridge on the rise and fall of Michel Djotodia

Central African Republic's interim President Michel Djotodia has resigned at a regional summit aimed at ending violence that has engulfed the country.

PM Nicolas Tiengaye also resigned at the meeting in Chad.

Thousands of people took to the streets in CAR's capital, Bangui, most of them celebrating the news.

Mr Djotodia, CAR's first Muslim leader, seized power last year. Since then 20% of the population have fled fighting between Christian and Muslim militias.

The UN has warned of an impending humanitarian disaster.

At the scene

At one demonstration this morning, a Christian man told me: "Now what happened to us will happen to them." As he spoke, others in the crowd sang: "Today, we are going to kill some Muslims." Shortly after that, a car driven by a man with a Muslim skull cap drove into the demonstration. A cry went up from the crowd. He sped off, lucky to escape with his life.
The crowd was joined by Christian vigilantes, known as anti-balaka. They were armed with a variety of crude weapons - knives, clubs, even bows and arrows. Some wore magic amulets they said turned away the enemy's bullets. I asked one of their commanders if they would now seek revenge.
"The Seleka slaughtered our people like animals," he said, referring to the mainly Muslim militia. "We had to kill them to make them afraid of us." But, he continued: "There's been enough killing. It should stop now."
We heard that from a lot of Christians in the crowd. Others though clearly remain angry - and there have been exchanges of fire this evening between Seleka and anti Balaka militias. The president's resignation might just take the steam out of this conflict - but it's too soon to say the bloodshed here is at an end.

Since December and the arrival of more regional peacekeepers and French troops, 1,000 people have died in sectarian clashes.

Many villages are deserted and in the past month the number of those who have fled their homes has doubled - including almost half of those living in the capital, Bangui.

Following the announcement from Chad, there were jubilant scenes in Bangui.

Carine Gbegbe, who has been living in a displacement camp, told Associated Press: "Finally we are free. We are going to return home at last."

Those celebrating Mr Djotodia's removal were largely Christians, the BBC's Paul Wood reports from Bangui, while Muslims largely stayed at home.

The main demand of Mr Djotodia's opponents had been for him to step down, and many Christians now want to go back to the way things were with their Muslim neighbours, our correspondent reports.

However, there has been firing on Friday between rival militias and it is too early to say the violence is at an end, he adds.

French tanks were quickly deployed around the presidential palace.

French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian called for a replacement for Mr Djotodia "as soon as possible".

The BBC's Paul Wood: "French troops watched as more and more Christians came out"

Who is Michel Djotodia?

  • Becomes first Muslim leader of an overwhelmingly Christian country after seizing power from Francois Bozize in March 2013
  • Has led several rebel groups
  • Served as both defence minister and diplomat under previous peace deals
  • Said to have used diplomatic posting in Sudan's Darfur region to forge alliance with Janjaweed militia and fighters from Chad, who played a key role in his seizure of power
  • Officially disbanded his Seleka rebel group but they continue to kill and loot

Mr Djotodia's resignation was made in a statement by the 10-nation Economic Community of Central African States (Eccas).

The whole of CAR's National Transitional Council (CNT) had been flown in at short notice to decide the leadership of their nation.

The lawmakers met regional leaders while Mr Djotodia held separate talks with allies from his former Seleka rebel alliance, AFP reported.

Under a deal brokered by regional powers last year, the CNT was charged with choosing a transitional leader to take CAR to elections due at the end of 2014. It formally elected Mr Djotodia to his position as interim president last April.

Seleka seized power last March overthrowing the then-President Francois Bozize, from CAR's majority Christian population.

The BBC's Paul Wood reports on the growing humanitarian crisis in CAR

Although Mr Djotodia officially disbanded the Seleka rebels, he has proved unable to keep them in check.

Their actions have prompted Christians to form vigilante groups, sparking a deadly cycle of revenge attacks.

The African Union now has some 4,000 peacekeepers in the country and France has deployed 1,600 troops to try to restore peace.

Jimco, Janaayo 10, 2014 (HOL) — Iyadoo inta badan goleyaasha deegaanka ee sannadkii hore la doortay laga dayrinayo shaqadooda ayaa waxaa weli taagan murankii u dhexeeyay maayar iyo maayar xigeenka degmada Booram ee xarunta gobolka Awdal. Taasoo ay dadweynuhu siyaabo kala duwan uga hadleen.
Tan iyo markii loo doortay maayarka, Saleban Xasan Xadi iyo maayar ku xigeenka Borama, Maxamed Faarax Dheerayste, waxaa u dhexeeyay kala aragti-duwanaasho marba marka ka dambeys soo xoogeysanaysay, iyadoo midba mid kale la raadinayo dabin iyo dagaal.

Magaalada Boorama ayaa laga dareemayaa muranka xoogeysnaya ee labada mas’uul u dhexeeya, iyadoo arrintu ay gaartay in xitaa murankooda lagu soo qaato khudbooyinka Jimaha.
“Sidaad la socotaan waxaa beryahan dambe soo bax-baxaayay dambiyo isku dhac ah oo ka dhashay shaqadii aan guddoomiye ku xigeenka u xilsaaray oo noqotay in masaajidda khudbadaha nagu soo daraan. Sidaas awgeed waxaa guddoomiye xigeenka la farayaa inuu joojiyo shaqada dhulka illaa khaladka jira la saxayo,” sidaa waxaa qoraal kusoo saaray maayarka.
Maayar ku xigeenka ayaa isna soo saaray qoraal jawaab u ahaa qoraalka ka soo baxay maayarka, isagoo ku yiri: “Anigoo tixraacaaya warqadda uu qoray guddoomiyaha golaha deegaanka Boorama waxaan halkan ku sheegayaa in inuusan guddoomiyuhu shaqada iga joojin karin, waayo iima xil-saarin wax shaqo ah. Guddoomiye iyo guddoomiye xigeenkaba waxaa si isku mid ah u wada dooraty golaha deegaanka ee Boorama. Haddaba, shaqadayda waxaa joojin kara golaha oo keliya, shaqaduna way soconaysaa.”
Qaar ka mid ah shacabka degmada Boorama oo ka hadlay arrintan ayaa yiri: “In laba mas’uul oo noocan ah ay xil u qabtaan Borama oo ah magaalo hal-bawle u ah Somaliland waa ayaan darro, waxaana golaha deegaanka iyo odayaasha magaalada la gudboon inay ka taliyaan bal sidii loo sixi lahaa labadan mas’uul isla markaana loo heshiisiin lahaa, sababtoo ah haddii uu khilaafkoodu intan muuqata dhaafo waxay dhaawac ku keeni doonaan shaqadii loo xushay inay dadweynaha u qabtaan, taas oo imikaba fadhiid noqotay.”
Si kastaba ha ahaatee, illaa hadda ma jirto wax xal ah oo labadan mas’uul ay murankooda ka gaareen, waxaana gabi ahaan hakad ku yimid hawlihii iyo mashaariicdii dowladda hoose gacanta ku haysay, iyadoo guddoomiye ku xigeenka golaha deegaanka Boorame, Maxamed Muxumad Dheerayte oo maanta saxaafadda la hadlay uu ka warramay khilaafka kala dhexeeya maayorka degmada Boorama.
