Sudan — A nation divided: Eritrea and Ethiopia’s proxy war

Eritrea’s importance in the Horn of Africa regional politics is dictated more by its strategic location along the Red Sea than its wealth. Despite talks of gold discovery, Eritrea is one the world’s poorest countries with an economy that was further bankrupted by a costly and absurd war with Ethiopia in 1998. Yet, Eritrea remains a regional power to reckon with. The sixth in our series about South Sudan’s pending historic independence referendum highlights Eritrea’s position; A position that naturally runs against Ethiopia’s.
Years after being a de facto leader of Eritrea, Isaias Afewerki was elected president in 1993 after the Horn of Africa country gained its independence from Ethiopia through a referendum. Four years after being installed as President, Isaias Afewerki refused to adhere to his promise of democratic reforms and has since ruled the country with an iron fist. And despite its independence from Ethiopia, the two countries have remained hostile to each other; The bone of contention is land.Read More

Somalia's Islamist militia join forces

MOGADISHU — Somalia's Islamist Hezb al-Islam militia officially joined forces with the Al Qaeda-inspired Shebab movement in what they said was meant to set up an "Islamic Caliphate" in the country.
The more political Hezb al-Islam, founded in 2007 by Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys -- a declared terrorist by the United States -- last weekend announced its intention to merge with the Shebab.
"The reason we have joined forces also includes continuing the holy war and standing against the invasion by the Christian forces and reclaim the holy territories of Muslims that were forcefully taken," said a statement released late Thursday.
Senior leaders of the two Islamist groups attended a ceremony to make the declaration in a mosque in the capital Mogadishu Thursday, but the movements' senior-most leaders were absent.
Relations between the two groups have nevertheless not been smooth and in the past year they have frequently fought for control of territory mainly in Somalia's southern regions.Read More

Somalia’s Puntland ready to hold reconciliation conference

Although Puntland is one of the most stable areas of Somalia, the invitation comes as insecurity and violence in parts of the region have reportedly been rampant in the last few months.
Somalia's semi-autonomous state of Puntland is ready to hold a reconciliation conference to bring peace back to war-ridden Somalia, an official said Friday.
Gen. Abdullahi Jama’, also known as Ilka Jiir, Puntland’s minister of interior, said his administration is committed to invite all Somali factions to Puntland to solve their differences and help create a peaceful environment.
Jama’ said Abdurrahman Mohammed Farole, Puntland’s president, announced the conference in Garowe, the capital of Puntland.
The minister noted that football players from all regions of Somalia had been invited in Garowe for a tournament, saying that is a clear sign of Puntland’s ability to host a general reconciliation conference for Somalis.Read More

Dutch arrest 12 on suspicion of terrorism

CNN) -- Dutch authorities have arrested 12 men of Somali origin they believe were about to carry out a terrorist attack, authorities said Saturday.
The country's intelligence service provided information that led to the arrests in Rotterdam, Public Prosecution Service spokesman Wim de Bruin told CNN.
No weapons or explosives were found, he said. The suspects are in police custody.
"The attack was said to be imminent so the national police started an investigation which led to the arrest of 12 Somalis later on Friday in Rotterdam," de Bruin said. "We are not sure about what the target was, how they were going to carry out the attack or when."
A Dutch counterterrorism office spokeswoman said the immediate threat to the country has been removed and the terror alert level will remain "limited," or relatively low.Read More

HARGEISA, Somaliland — In the mist forests of the Golis Mountains in northern Somalia, clouds roll in off the sea. Up and over the mountain ridges, they evaporate into the desert air.
There, in the southern slopes, stumpy trees grow as if anchored to the mountainside by some unknown force. From the hand-slashed bark of these stubborn, spiky trees leak droplets of a gum that hardens into a chewy resin.
These aromatic gums are the biblical frankincense and myrrh. Harvested and dried, they have been highly valued trade items for thousands of years. The gums are simply processed and exported. They look like dirty little stones, and they find their way out of Somalia's wild north and into European perfumes, Christian churches, Arabian households and Chinese medicines.Read More

Mogadishu in Manhattan, After Cops Called on DPR, TFG Says Controls 55%

UNITED NATIONS, December 17 -- Days after a fight in the Somali Mission to the UN in New York, reported exclusively by Inner City Press, the new Somali Minister of Information, Post and Telecommunications Abdulkareem Jama came to the UN to describe the new government he is a part of.
He said that many of the 18 new ministers are from the Somali diaspora. Of former Deputy Permanent Representative Idd Beddel Mohamed, who showed up at the Somali Mission saying that the new foreign minister gave him authorization to return, only to have the police called to throw him out, Abdulkareem Jama said that wasn't yet decided.
The chaos of Mogadishu, then, is echoed in Manhattan.
Abdulkareem Jama put a relentlessly upbeat spin on Somalia, saying that Mogadishu is 55% controlled by the Transitional Federal Government. Inner City Press asked about reports of the TFG and Puntland using private military contractors or mercenaries.
