“The world has gone crazy,” the pastor told the congregation of around 300 at Kato’s funeral.
“People are turning away from the scriptures. They should turn back, they should abandon what they are doing. You cannot start admiring a fellow man.”
Around a third of the people there were members of the country’s gay community, and a handful then vocally challenged the pastor’s bigotry.
“Who are you to judge others?” one woman shouted. “We have not come to fight.
“You are not the judge of us. As long as he’s gone to God his creator, who are we to judge Kato?”
Later, the villagers refused to bury Kato’s body, and it was left to his greiving friends to put him in his final resting place, reports Reuters.
Kato’s violent death last week prompted worldwide shock and sorrow. US President Barack Obama was among many leaders to offer their commiserations.
