SOMALIA: UN envoy hails Somalia parliament’s approval of Kampala accord

MOGADISHU (RBC) The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General for Somalia Augustine Mahiga has met officials Somalia transitional government on Tuesday after one day visit in Mogadishu.
“I came here to congratulate the prime minister over his appointment and his overwhelming support [endorsement] by parliament”. Mahiga told reporters in Mogadishu shortly after he met with Somalia Prime Minister Abdiweli Mohamed Ali at his office.
Mr. Mahiga hailed that Somalia parliament voted for the Kampala agreement on Monday in which he described as courageous decision.

“I also came to give encouragement to the TFIs for the wonderful spirit of cooperation and solidarity which they have expressed so far [in] agreeing on the appointment of the prime minister and his endorsement and yesterday parliament overwhelmingly endorsed the Kampala accord”. He added.
He also met with the interim president Sheikh Sharif and the speaker of the parliament at the presidential villa where he said they talked on what would be the next step of the TFG after the ending of its mandate on upcoming year.
“We are discussing with the prime minister, with the president and the speaker on the next steps which I hope will be equally in the spirit of collaboration and solidarity forming a cabinet and the formation of the cabinet we look forward to a meeting which will be inclusive for the Somali stakeholders in the peace process to accept and define a road map which will guide us through the next twelve months after the end of this current transition on 20th of August”. Mr. Mahiga continued.
“So far I have had excellent [and] very encouraging discussions with the prime minister and I will continue to have further discussions with the speaker..”
On his side Somalia prime minister, Abdiweli Mohamed Ali said the meeting was broad and was also discussed in the current droughts that hit the country.
In the same time, the prime minister received United Nations humanitarian coordinator Mark Bowden who visited Mogadishu on Monday along with UN envoy to experience the humanitarian situation in Somalia.
