Judith Richardson suffered a 'brutal attack' according to police Police investigating the murder of Northumberland pensioner Judith Richardson have arrested a man at the centre of a nationwide manhunt.
Northumbria Police arrested Graeme Jarman, 47, in a library in North Yorkshire following a tip-off by staff.Miss Richardson, 77, was found battered to death at her home in St Wilfrid's Road in Hexham on 19 August.
Staff at the library in Filey contacted police on Saturday afternoon. Shortly afterwards Mr Jarman was detained.
Det Ch Supt Neil Adamson of Northumbria Police said: "I would like to thank the public and the media for their assistance during this investigation, it has been their support which has made today's arrest possible."
Mr Jarman went missing from his home in Consett, County Durham shortly before Miss Richardson's body was found.
Police discovered Miss Richardson hours after her handbag was found dumped in a waste bin in Newcastle city centre.
A hammer, which police said was the murder weapon, was found in an Aldi bag close to Miss Richardson's home.
