100 killed in Somali bloodshed

Ugandan soldiers serving in Somalia under the African Union mission in Somalia load their machine guns as they zero in their weapons at a range in one of their bases in Mogadishu.
Over a hundred people have been killed in clashes between African Union (AU) troops and al-Shabab fighters across Somalia during the past three days.

The attacks in the capital Mogadishu -- dubbed as "days of bloody clashes" -- have left at least 50 fighters dead, Somali Prime Minister Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed said Sunday.

"Several extremist insurgents have been killed in the fighting with only five minor injuries on our own troops," the premier said.

However, some 15 civilians have also lost their lives in the attacks.

Al-Shabab accuses AU troops of invading the country. The fighters say they will continue their battles until the AU forces withdraw from Somalia.

For months, Mogadishu has been the scene of daily battles between government forces and local fighters -- both of whom are trying to take control of the capital. Read More

Ethiopia and Kenya differ on Somalia

Kenya plans to help create an autonomous region on the border with Somalia as one way of stabilising the lawless country.
A leaked US embassy cable says the Jubaland region will provide a buffer zone and prevent the entry of refugees and illegal arms into the country.
However, Ethiopia is not enthusiastic about the plan, dubbed the Jubaland Initiative, because of its likely impact on its own Somali-dominated Ogaden region where rebels are fighting for autonomy.
Addis Ababa also doubts Kenya’s tactical capacity to carry out the plan given the strong presence of al-Shabaab rebels in Jubaland whose capital city is Kismayo. The rebels are opposed to a breakaway Jubaland.

Somalia: UN official says it will negotiate Al Shabab

Nairobi (UN)-  Negotiations with Somali insurgents for access to civilians caught up in the conflict will be a priority for the United Nations, as drought threatens to worsen the already “chronic catastrophe” in the country, a senior U.N. official said.
“We can’t afford to see a continual shrinking of humanitarian access in south and central Somalia. We have to try every means to address that,” said Mark Bowden, the U.N. Humanitarian Coordinator for Somalia. “We need to call upon the insurgents, al Shabaab and others, for far better recognition of the need for humanitarian assistance.”
“We have to strive continuously to improve discussions, negotiations … to get people to accept responsibility, their own responsibilities, for the populations that live in the areas that they claim to control and that I think has to be our priority for the coming year,” he added.Read More

1,000-man militia being trained in north Somalia

NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 01, 2010 (AP) — In the northern reaches of Somalia and the country's presidential palace, a well-equipped military force is being created, funded by a mysterious donor nation that is also paying for the services of a former CIA officer and a senior ex-U.S. diplomat.

The Associated Press has determined through telephone and e-mail interviews with three insiders that training for an anti-piracy force of up to 1,050 men has already begun in Puntland, a semiautonomous region in northern Somalia that is believed to hold reserves of oil and gas.

But key elements remain unknown — mainly who is providing the millions of dollars in funding and for what ultimate purpose.
Pierre Prosper, an ambassador-at-large for war crimes issues under former President George W. Bush, told AP he is being paid by a Muslim nation he declined to identify to be a legal adviser to the Somali government, focusing on security, transparency and anti-corruption.

Prosper said the donations from the Muslim nation come from a "zakat fund," referring to charitable donations that Islam calls for the faithful to give each year. The same donor is paying for both training programs.Read More

The U.N.'s humanitarian affairs office on Somalia said Wednesday that the request is down 23 percent compared with the 2010 request. That drop is a result of a reassessment of food aid needs.
