Somalia: US describes Sheik Sharif the most visionary leader in Somalia

NAIROBI (Mareeg)—The United States has described Somali President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed as the most visionary leader in Somalia who could restore stability and order in the country.

US Ambassador to Kenya Michael Ranneberger said on Wednesday Sheikh Sharif was a more legitimate leader selected by a very broad process.

“Sheikh Sharif is the most visionary leader that Somalia has had and he does have clear idea of moving things forward so he is very different from former presidents,” he said.

The statement of the US Ambassador to Kenya comes as the Islamist rebels in Somalia intensified their fighting against the government led by President Sheikh Sharif.

US Secretary of Foreign affairs Hillary Clinton said Sheikh Sharif was the best hope to restore stability in Somalia when she had a meeting in Nairobi last month.

“In fact he is a scholar and intellectual and I think that gives him real legitimacy he is also a figure of a lot of respect with in Somalia,” Ranneberger added.

Ranneberger said they would continue supporting the Somalia government and the humanitarian assistance they provide to the Somali people
