“You can go to heaven if you want to, but I would rather stay right here in Bermuda”
-Mark Twain, 18th century famous American writer
When I realized three weeks before the holidays that my office was going to be shutdown for 11 days, I saw a delightful opportunity to travel and this time maybe a closer destination. First I entertained a week’s getaway to Central America and then shifted to the Caribbean islands. The choice was Bermuda for only two reasons; firstly, all other destinations I was a bit too late in arranging airline tickets and accommodations, but Bermuda seemed hassle-free, it was an off-season and I would not encounter trouble or exorbitant prices for lodging, that itself was a boon. This also meant less tourists and more quality time getting a real feel for the island. Obviously my purpose for travel is not only pleasure, but to also get acquainted with the history and culture of the location and Bermuda turned out to be an excellent choice in that regard. Another fascinating discovery was Bermuda’s relation to my previous travel story of America's Jamestown settlement and the historic triangle -- the place that gave birth to the United States of America. A huge country emerged from a tiny land in Virginia.

The wealth of information I learned about Bermuda during my visit

Bermuda was discovered in 1505 by Juan De Bermudez, a Spanish Captain who may have sailed with Christopher Columbus. On his voyage back from West Indies in La Garza after dropping off slaves, he spotted the uninhabited island. As he could not write and few records remain, very little was known from Bermudez, except that he was an experienced sailor and businessman who made an 11 crossing at that time, but unfortunately, he never claimed the Island for Spain. Bermuda's real history started only in 1609 when a group of colonists landed ashore after their ship got wrecked at a nearby reef. Continued
