HARGEISA (RBC) The president of Somalia’s self proclaimed state of Somaliland Ahmed Mahamud Silanyo has issued order to release two famous clerics jailed seven years in Hargeisa for terrorism charges, RBC Radio reports.
The order came on Tuesday following the 20th anniversary of Somaliland secession from Somalia in 1991.
“The president of Somaliland freed the two clerics after serving seven years in jail for the sake of 18 may”, presidential statement said.
The freed prisoners include Sheikh Mohammed Ismail who was arrested in 2004 by the former Rayale’s regime. Local media published in 2006 pictures showing the torture of Sheikh Ismail by Ethiopian interrogators.
Somaliland separation is due to celebrate on Wednesday 18 May as national Independence Day.
Despite its relative stability, the human rights group and local media report Somaliland’s constant infringement on Muslim clerics and the media individuals.
Other Famous cleric was detained on Friday in Wajale district for criticism of 18 May commemoration.
