The leader of a gang of gunmen who snatched British holidaymaker Judith Tebbutt in Kenya is a warlord who carries out piracy raids, it was claimed yesterday.
Ali Shebwana, 34, the son of a village chief, claimed the kidnapper is from Kenya but lives in Somalia and is loyal to Islamic militant group al-Shabaab.
Last night an al-Shabaab official said the group was not involved in the kidnap.

It is thought Met officers in Kenya helping with the case will investigate the lead.
The revelation came as the brother of deaf social worker Mrs Tebbutt, 56, said relatives are comforting her mother Gladys in Ulverston, Cumbria. Paul Atkinson, 45, said: “We are all very upset and our mum is finding this extremely hard to deal with.”
A second man is now being held over the kidnap of Mrs Tebbutt, of Bishop’s Stortford, Herts, and the shooting of her husband David, 58, at Kiwayu Safari Village resort.
