South Sudan – War in Bor

South Sudan – War in Bor: The spokesman for the South Sudanese Army (SPLA) confirmed (23.02.2014 – Juba) that the regular forces resisted an attack carried out by rebel militias in the town of Bor (map), 190 km north of Juba. The attacks on Bor follow earlier armed clashes in the town of Malakal (map -Tuesday 18.02.2014), in defiance of the current peace efforts. Clashes continue between the SPLA and the rebel militias lead by the former Vice President of South Sudan, Machar, as the cease-fire is broken – the conditional withdrawal of Ugandan troops (deployed to secure strategic areas like the international airport and the capital city, Juba) and the release of four “political detainees”, have been delayed in virtue of the breaking of the agreed cease-fire by the opposition militias. The SPLA is now committed to regain full control of the town of  Malakal, and restore peace across the country. A humanitarian crisis is under way, with more than 800’000 displaced people in South Sudan.
