The former international forms part of the African icons who will play in the game in Accra to unite the continent, with Didier Drogba also among the names taking part

The former Nigeria captain Nwankwo Kanu has confirmed his participation in the Michael Essien charity match scheduled to take place on Wednesday in Ghana.The game dubbed “Africa XI and the World XI” is aimed at drumming home the need for peace on a continent ravaged with conflict and hunger. Essien is an African Union peace ambassador and the date coincides with the AU Day earmarked as a holiday in most African countries.
Former Arsenal player Kanu told the This Day newspaper he is delighted to get involved in an initiative that touches many lives in Africa.
“I’m looking forward to taking part in the charity match in Accra because it is for a very good cause,” Kanu said.
“I have known Michael since he joined Chelsea and although I’ve often been on the end of defeats [laughing] we have always remained friends. After all we are both professionals doing our jobs.”
The Ohene Djan Sports Stadium in Accra will also witness the likes of Ashley Cole, Didier Drogba, Emmanuel Adebayor and legend Kalusha Bwalya.
