ISIS has created an app to teach children the letters of the Arabic alphabet, but placed violent imagery throughout to indoctrinate the children. The app is called “Huroof” meaning “letters.” It was produced by the Library of Zeal propaganda department and aims to “teach the cubs of the caliphate the letters of the alphabet.”
ISIS refers to the children in its schools as “cubs” as opposed to its soldiers whom it calls “lions.”
The app was shared using the encrypted service Telegram and on file sharing sites. It features brightly-colored images and songs to help enable memorization.
The songs contain extremist rhetoric. They use words beginning with each letter, but the words include gun, tank, rocket and bullet.
News of the app was shared on social media by the underground news service Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently, which smuggles news out of ISIS held territory, and was widely reported by news outlets.
