On May 12 a group of four “Metromarathoners” will attempt to visit all of Moscow’s subway stations in one day, according to TJournal.ru.
The Moscow metro runs from 5:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. and the “metromarathoners" believe they will be able to visit all 199 stations in 20 hours. The stunt is dedicated to the anniversary of the underground rail system, which in 2016 turns 81 years old (the first line opened on May 15, 1935).
It was Alexei Tikhonov, analyst at Russia's largest search engine Yandex, who came up with the idea of holding the marathon. His optimal travel route through the subway is based on several algorithms and will take him on a journey of 208.5 miles (335.5 km) under the Russian capital.
Tikhonov told TJournal that 20 metro working hours would suffice to visit all the stations. However, next year it will be impossible to visit all the stations in one day: By the end of 2016, 12 new stations will have been opened, with another 10 to follow in 2017.
The project's organizers will conduct a live video transmission of the marathon on social networks and on metromarafon2016.ru.
