East African Nations Urge Deployment of More Troops in Somalia

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development, which groups six East African nations, expressed “deep concern” that the United Nations Security Council hasn’t responded to its request for more peacekeepers in Somalia.
The forces are required to impose a naval blockade and a no-fly zone in Somalia to “prevent the entry of foreign elements,” the Djibouti-based organization said in a statement after a summit of the region’s leader in Ethiopia today. The group wants an African Union deployment increased to 20,000 soldiers from about 8,000 now.
