DETROIT - Border Patrol officials announced on Thursday that they charged a Columbus man with misuse of a visa after he falsely identified himself as a U.S. citizen.
According to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials, Hassan Nur was crossing the international border in a taxicab on Sunday when officers stopped the vehicle.
Nur, 52, showed officers a valid U.S. Permanent Resident Card and said that he was traveling back to Ohio from a Windsor, Ont., casino, investigators said. Nur told investigators that he needed to take a cab because he had too many drunken-driving arrests.
A scan of Nur's fingerprints revealed that he was not a U.S. citizen, but a Somali asylee, according to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
According to investigators, Nur later admitted his identity and said that the identification presented was not his. Officers arrested Nur on the scene.
