Gaddafi blames Osama Bin Laden for Libyan unrest

Published Date: 24 February 2011
Colonel Muammar Gaddafi has said that Osama Bin Laden is responsible for manipulating protestors in Libya.
Speaking on state television via telephone, the Libyan leader said youngsters were being given drugs and alcohol and were criminals.

He also said they were being tricked into participating in the largest protests since he took power.

"Bin Laden ... this is the enemy who is manipulating people," Gaddafi said.

"Bin Laden is the criminal, catch him and present him to
court. He is the one in charge of any murder or any disaster."

"Do not be swayed by Bin Laden."

He claimed al Qaida militants are "exploiting" teenagers, giving them "hallucinogenic pills in their coffee".

Gaddafi said: "Their ages are 17. They give them pills at night they put hallucinatory pills in their drinks, their milk, their coffee their Nescafe."

"They are criminals ... is it logical that you let this phenomenon continue in any city? ... We do not see what is happening in Egypt and Tunisia happening in Libya, ever!"

Libya's Quryna newspaper said at least 10 people have been killed in the town of Zawiyah. It has seen clashes between protesters and government supporters.

Speaking about the unrest in the town 30 miles from Tripoli, Gadafi said: "What is happening in Zawiyah is a farce. ... Sane men don't enter such a farce."

In later parts of Gaddafi's speech, he compared his 41 years as ruler of Libya with the Queen's 59-year reign over Britain and the Commonwealth.

Gaddafi said: "There are people who have been in power longer than me, like Queen Elizabeth of Britain."

Today, the first Brits caught up in chaos returned.

David Cameron apologised for delays in organising transport out of the country after some complained about a lack of communication from the Foreign Office.
