Somalia: Puntland, TFG sign deal to horminse Galkayo accord



Representatives from Puntland state government and Somali transition government have signed an agreement to harmonize an accord which its first phase was signed by Somali PM and Puntland President on August 23 in central Somali town of Galkayo .

The two sides met on Monday in Nairobi’s Safari Park Hotel, where foreign envoys representing different countries including Italy, France, Spain, Sweden and EU special envoy were present. UN’s special representative to Somalia Ahmedou Wallad Abdallah was also present.

On Puntland side, the agreement was signed by Interior Minister Gen. Abdullahi Ahmed Jama (Ilkajir) while Defense Minister Abdullahi Boss signed for the TFG. Puntland President Abdirahman Mohammed Farole and TFG’s Deputy Prime Minister Sharif Hassan witnessed the signing of the agreement.

In parts, the agreement reads that two sides have agreed:

1- To strengthen law and order in the mainland and at sea

2- To re-establish and maintain the Somali navy to fight piracy (with its headquarters in Puntland)

3- To create opportunities for the jobless and specifically those living along the coastline.

4 To clean toxic waste along Somalia’s coastline (especially Puntland)

5- To sensitize the public against the dangers of piracy in order to end the menace.

Puntland state, a collection of seven Somali regions that declared itself as an autonomous state in 1998, has remained part of a Federal Somalia.
