UN Integrates Its Three Offices in Africa to UNOAU

BY NEW BUSINESS ETHIOPIA REPORTER
Integrating its three different offices in Africa under one umbrella, the United Nations officially opens a new office, UNOAU (United Nations Office to the African Union), here in Addis Ababa,Ethiopia, yesterday evening (February 22, 2011).
“The opening on UNOAU office help to strengthen the relationship between the African Union and the United Nations,” said ASG Zachary Muburi-Muita, Head of UNOAU briefing journalists at the UN Economic Commission for Africa.
UNOAU will now takeover all the activities of the three previous offices namely: the former UN Liaison Office, the former African Union Peacekeeping Support Team and the former United nations Planning Team for AMISOM (African Union Mission in Somalia).

When the office becomes fully operational it will have a total of 65 staff both from local and abroad, according to Mr. Zachary, who is appointed by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon.

According to ASG Zachary, the mandate of the UNOAU includes enhancing the partnership between the UN and AU in the areas of peace and security. It also provides coordinated and consistent UN advice to the AU on both long-term capacity building and short-term operational support.

The establishment of UNOAU was approved by the UN General Assembly on July 2010 appointing the former Ambassador ASG Zachary Muburi-Muita of Kenya to the UN in New York.
