Toby Day had been recognised for his work at Leicestershire Police A former police inspector found fatally injured with his wife and six-year-old daughter had been sacked last week, it has been confirmed.
Toby Day, 37, was found in the house in Melton Mowbray on Thursday after a 15-year-old-girl, believed to be another daughter, raised the alarm.Police said they had begun a murder inquiry but were not looking for anyone else in connection with the case.
Mr Day was dismissed after a misconduct hearing on 1 December.
He had been employed by Leicestershire Constabulary.
His daughter and son, named locally as Kimberley, aged 15, and Adam, 13, who were injured, are in hospital where their conditions are described as stable.
'Screams heard' Officers forced their way into the semi-detached house in Robin Crescent after the 15-year-old ran into nearby Swallowdale Primary School, where Mr Day's wife, Samantha, is understood to have worked at an adjoining nursery.
All four people inside were taken to hospital but Mr and Mrs Day and their six-year-old daughter, Genevieve, died.

The force confirmed Mr Day was sacked following a misconduct hearing for misuse of police systems and matters concerning honesty and integrity.
Neighbour Gavin Lucas said: "I saw Toby out jogging and with his children. He was a good bloke, always said hello. I wouldn't have expected this from him.
"My auntie lives next door to me and she told me she heard screaming."
'Heavily hit' The Reverend Kevin Ashby, of Melton Parish Church, said: "Melton is going to be very heavily hit by what they've experienced last night and this morning.
"It just doesn't happen in a place like Melton, is how I think people feel, but it can happen anywhere and what we must do now is rally around and try and give the family as much support as possible."
Canon Lee Francis-Dehqani, vicar of All Saints Church in Oakham where the family worshipped, said: "The family were well-known to Oakham parish church where they were regular worshippers and they were known to me personally.
"I prepared the two older children for confirmation in October 2011.
Floral tributes have been left at the scene "Appropriate pastoral care is already being offered to the wider family whose privacy should be respected at this difficult time."
Det Ch Supt Andy Hough said: "Detectives from the East Midlands special operations unit major crime team, including officers from Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, are continuing to investigate the circumstances that led to these tragic deaths.
"I would ask anyone who spoke to Mr Day yesterday who hasn't yet spoken with police to contact us. I would like to thank the community for their support last night."
Ivan Stafford, chairman of Leicestershire Police Federation, said: "We are saddened and shocked by this incident. Our thoughts are with family members and colleagues at this time."
Malise Graham, leader of Melton Borough Council, said the authority would be offering any help it could.
"Melton is a very close community and it is shocking, made all the more so by the time of year."
A police cordon remains in place and forensic officers are examining the scene.
Post-mortem examinations are due to take place later.
