KUWAIT CITY, Feb 22: Head of Endocrine and Diabetes Unit at Jahra Hospital Dr Sameer Al-Shimmari revealed that more than 27 percent of people in Kuwait are suffering from diabetes, reports Al-Anba daily.
Dr Al-Shimmari warned those suffering from diabetes mellitus against foot infections, as they could run into the risk of amputation of feet, adding that doctors have been performing such surgeries annually on nearly 10,000 people in the world.
He indicated that about six percent of diabetes patients, which is approximately 37,000 people, are suffering from foot infections, stressing that the patient’s foot has to be amputated if the infection is not treated in the early stages.
Meanwhile, Dr Al-Shimmari revealed that medical socks are useful in reducing the risks of foot amputations, adding that it heals skin cuts and surface wounds.
He pointed out that the US diabetes Center is encouraging people to wear these medical socks as it helps in retaining skin moisture.

KUWAIT CITY: The Medical Emergency Department collaborated with the Kuwait Fire Service Directorate, Directorate General for Civil Defense and officials at the United Nations Building in Khaitan to organize an emergency evacuation drill recently as part of its activities to provide training on rescue operations, reports Al-Nahar daily quoting informed sources.
The drill was based on an imaginary fire accident that involved injured victims in the United Nations Building. Rescue officers from the civil defense and fire service directorates rushed swiftly for rescue operations. The officers first evacuated the staff after which the fire was extinguished to prevent it from spreading further to the nearby structures. Paramedics treated some injured victims at the site while others were rushed to hospitals for treatment.
Acting Director of Public Relations and Coordination at Medical Emergency Department Waleed Al-Othman declared that the operation was carried out in coordination with all concerned departments in order to enhance the training of officers to deal with real situations.
He stressed that the drill was also good to ascertain level of readiness of the officers to deal with such incidents.
