GIRLS, be brave, focused and determined. Be untouchable. Shun sugar daddies. The future will be in your hands. This was the advice Nabagereka Sylvia Nagginda gave to 230 girls in their Senior Six vacation.

The girls, who have been undergoing training in ways of safeguarding against sugar daddies, were passed out yesterday at Makerere University Business School, Kampala.

“AIDS has adversely affected the youth and the statistics present a grim picture. In universities, you find girls giving in to sex for luxuries,” Nagginda said. “Even boys have a problem of sugar mummies.”
Nagginda, who also launched the Go-Getters residential camp, urged
the girls to set positive goals and pursue them.

“I am hopeful that you can make it. We shall reduce the AIDS scourge, if not, wipe it out completely.”

The Nabagereka was flanked by the director of the Straight Talk Foundation, Cathy Watson and Dr. Susan Mukasa, the country representative of Population Services International, a health firm.
The two agencies organised the camp.

The Go-Getters Club is geared towards curbing cross-generational sex. It targets university students and uses peer educators to reach female students.

The campaign was launched in response to “shocking statistics that show HIV prevalence in Uganda is five times higher in girls aged 15 to 19 than in boys of the same age,” indicated by programme literature.

The girls have been in camp for the last four days. They were counselled and taught how to start income generating projects while at university.
“Some of these girls will hopefully be able to pay their own school fees,” explained the facilitators.

The group is part of the hundreds of others, in ten other major universities, undergoing the same orientation this month.

More 500 girls are expected undergo the same training at the same camp in weeks to come.

According to Dr. Mukasa, for every 10 men, one of them is HIV-positive.
“Men do their best to convince girls in having sex, in exchange for gifts. It is important to empower the girls morally and economically.”
