– Detectives have released details of the late Jacob Juma’s moments and movements before he was assassinated. The detectives say they have interviewed 10 people so far as many more are likely to be grilled
– Among those likely to be grilled is Deputy President William Ruto who Juma repeatedly accused of plotting to assassinate him
– Juma was killed on the night of Thursday, May 5, 2016, near Lenana School, according to police
Deputy President William Ruto is among those likely to be questioned over the assassination of Nairobi businessman Jacob Juma.
This is according to the head of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Ndegwa Muhoro, who was responding after being asked about the deputy president.
Giving an update on the investigations on Tuesday, May 17, Muhoro said that detectives will grill all the people the deceased linked to his assassination before he was eventually shot dead on the night of Thursday, May 5, 2016.
“There is nothing that will stop us from summoning or talking to anyone we deem as person of interest,” Muhoro said as quoted by Standard.
Ruto is one of the people the late Juma adversely mentioned in a number of his social media posts as having the plan to eliminate him because of his political stand.
In a number of tweets, Juma claimed that he had learnt of meetings chaired by the deputy president planning how he would be assassinated.
And during his requiem mass, former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo claimed that police should start the investigations by questioning Ruto.
His words, however, angered the deputy president who threatened to sue him for linking him to the murder of the city tycoon.
On Tuesday, Muhoro said detectives had questioned over 10 people who are of interest to the probe. He also revealed that a woman was with the deceased on the day he met his death. Police have questioned the woman.
Here is a brief breakdown of Juma’s last moments and movements before he was killed:
19.34: the deceased’s vehicle is captured opposite Westlands Bus Terminus driving along Waiyaki Way towards the CBD with the deceased on the driver’s seat and the passenger.
19.36: the late Juma is captured by the CCTV footage along Waiyaki way near Villa Rosa driving towards Uhuru highway.
19.38: he is captured at Kenyatta/Uhuru highway near Ministry of Tourism, driving along Uhuru highway towards Mombasa road.
19.53: Juma is seen at Uhuru highway near Central park, heading towards Waiyaki Way.
19.55: the deceased is captured at Nyerere Road near Children’s Traffic Park, along Nyerere Road towards Kenyatta Avenue.
20.14: the cameras capture Juma at Argwings Kodhek Road, near Yaya Centre, heading towards Ole Odume Road.
According to Muhoro, this was the last footage found on the deceased’s movements.
Until his death, Juma was a strong Jubilee government critic and a Raila Odinga supporter. The opposition has claimed that the government had a hand in the murder of the businessman because of the information he allegedly had on the NYS and Eurobond scandals.
Early investigations by police indicated that he was shot twice on the chest after the assassins broke the window of his bullet proof car.
Juma was killed on the night of May 5, 2016, along Ngong Road near Lenana School, police claimed. However, it is suspected he was killed elsewhere and his body and car dumped at the scene.
