The Arabs intensified their pressure Tuesday on the Syrian regime, with a request to the UN to support their plan to end the rule of President Bashar al-Assad. This came amid the announcement by the Gulf states about the withdrawal of their observers from Syria.After adopting a new initiative on Syria on Sunday, the Arab League has asked the U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to meet him in New York in order to submit a resolution to the Security Council. The Prime Minister of Qatar said Sunday that the initiative included "the departure of the Syrian regime in a peaceful manner." "If it is not implemented, we will go to the Security Council" of the UN, he warned.
Meanwhile, the six Arab monarchies of the Gulf called on the Security Council, including its five permanent members, to "undertake all necessary measures to put pressure on Syria and bring it to implement the Arab peace plan" , said an official, according to AFP.
They also decided to withdraw their observers from the Arab mission to Syria, following the announcement by Saudi Arabia in protest against the continued repression of protest in Syria .
On Monday, at least 23 civilians were killed by security forces, according to Syrian Observatory of Human Rights.
