Somalia lawmakers censure Kenya over arrests

4 Feb 4, 2010 - 10:56:43 AM

More than forty Somali legislators have drafted a motion to censure Kenya over alleged harassment of Somalis, who are living in Nairobi.

The MPs, who held press briefing in Mogadishu, are demanding the transition federal government to seek an apology from the government of Kenya regarding the issue.

“To ask the Kenyan government to give an apology over the problems and abuses that were subjected to Somalis residing in her country. If Kenya does not apologize, then Somali government should cut its diplomatic and trade relations,” reads part of the motion.

The MPs want the international agencies to move their bases from Kenya to other countries in the region such as Djibouti. And also not to hold international meetings meant for Somalia in Kenya.

The motion has been passed to the Speaker of the Transitional Federal Parliament and the lawmakers want the speaker to provide guidance on the matter as soon as possible.

The arrest of thousands of Somalis, in Nairobi’s Eastleigh neighborhood and countrywide, has attracted criticism from all quarters of the country and neighboring countries with Somali leaders accusing Nairobi of economical oppression.
