Somali president comes under attack

At least 2 people are reportedly killed and few others injured after insurgents carried out attack on Somalia’s President’s plane that landed in Mogadishu’s Aden Adde International airport.

President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed was returning from an official visit to Ethiopia on Wednesday when insurgents fired mortars at his plane, according to reports.

However, African Union peacekeeping troops which guard the airport returned the fire. no reports of casualty from the returned fire of AU troops.

In Addis Ababa, President Ahmed attended the African Union heads of government summit.

Ahmed also held talks with Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, which they discussed peace and security situation in Somali and regional issues.

Meles commended the TFG president for his commitment working in unstable situation in the country, urging him to focus also on political works besides undertaking activities to ensure peace and security in his country.

“Ethiopia is ready to help TFG so as to succeed in the fight against the opposition armed groups that have links with Al-Qaeda,” Meles said.

On his part, President Ahmed said his government is planning to alaunch offensives against Al-Shabaab and Hizbul, the two main Somali rebels, whom he described as anti-peace.

Somalia’s president also held talks with some other African leaders to brief about the situation in the war-torn country.

The summit was concluded with promise to help Somalia, which has been marred by years of civil war, achieve the elusive peace.
