Somalia: Al-Shabaab seize town near Kenya border

16 Feb 16, 2010 - 8:53:00 AM

Somalia’s Al-Shabaab insurgent claims that it has captured Somali border town of Diif near Kenya, after heavy fighting with their rivals Hizbul Islam.

Sheikh Hassan Yaqub, one of the heads of Al-Shabaab’s Islamic administration in Jubba regions said his fighters attacked the town and forcible ejected the ‘rulers’.

"Our fighters forcible emitted the town’s rulers in heavy fighting. I can confirm that Diif is under our control,” he was quoted as saying.

He added that his group has not suffered any casualty, contrary to reports that several fighters have been killed in the fighting.

The group has now taken the control of almost the entire Jubba regions from their once ally turn enemy Hizbul Islam, which its fighters are reportedly scattered across the border with some even reportedly crossing to neighboring Kenya.
