Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia is reportedly pushing for a new UN resolution against Syria. Diplomats said that the kingdom on Friday circulated a new draft resolution at the UN General Assembly, which also calls for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to hand over power to his deputy.
The Saudi-backed draft urges UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to appoint a special envoy for Syria, diplomats said. Resolutions passed at the General Assembly, unlike those of the UNSC, are not binding.
