According to the agreement signed between the two sides yesterday (March 17, 2011), the grant will be disbursed over the coming four years (2012-2015). The grant will be delivered by the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF).
“The agreement supports all the Growth and Transformation Plan pillars of Ethiopia, except infrastructure, in a harmonized and coordinated manner,” said Ahmed Shede, State Minister of Finance and Economic Development at the signing ceremony.
Sustainable economic growth and risk reduction, as one of the four major areas, will get 49 percent of the total grant followed by basic social services, which constitute 40 percent of the total grant. Governance and capacity development, women youth and children are also the areas the fund is planned to be allocated.
“For every development professional, this is an exciting time to be in Ethiopia. The country is on a solid development path, and improvements in human development are all too evident,” said Eugene Owusu, UN Resident Coordinator, who signed the grant agreement representing the United Nations.
The main implementing partners of the framework will be government institutions at all levels in all regions and administrative cities.
