Somalia clashes kills 11

At least 11 people have been killed and more than 20 injured after heavy fighting between Ahlu Sunah troops and Al-Shabaab militants on Thursday.

The clashes broke out after Al-Shabaab militias attacked Luuq, a Somali-Ethiopian border town in Gedo region of Somalia, where Ahlu Sunah forces control.

A witness who spoke on condition of anonymity told Garowe Online “three people were dead after mortars hit their house in the town and seven others were wounded,”

He adds that seven others from the warring sides have been killed and 11 others injured in the fighting.

“Ahlu Sunah injured soldiers were rushed to a hospital in Dooloow a neighbouring Ethiopian district.” residents told GO.

Al-Shabaab spokesman Sheikh Abdulaziz Abu Muscab told the reporters in Somali capital, Mogadishu that his militias attacked Luuq District. He claimed that they killed Sunah soldiers and seized the town, but Ahlu Sunah officials denied their claims.

Ahlu Sunna Wal Jamaa, a moderate pro-government Islamists seized Luuq and several strategic towns in southern Somalia from Al-Shabaab, the Al-Qaeda linked militia early this month after deadly clashes that left dead more than 100 civilians and forces thousands to flee from their homes.

The militias control much of south and central Somalia regions and fighting with Somali weak transitional government backed African Union Troops to take over the control of the country.

Somalia was without functioning government since 1991.
