AU high level ad hoc committee on Libya meets in Ethiopia

ADDIS ABABA, March 25 (Xinhua) --- The AU High Level Ad Hoc Committee on Libya held a consultative meeting on Friday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The Meeting is involving the members of the AU Peace and Security Council, the members of the ad hoc committee as well as the neighboring countries and AU partners.
The meeting is held in order to agree on ways and means of an early exit from the crisis and to agree on a mechanism for consultation and joint actions to be taken, said AU in a statement at the opening of the meeting on Friday.
"The neighboring countries of Libya will be affected if the situation worsened in the country.. the AU is urgently trying to find lasting solution to the crisis," said Jean Ping, AUC Chairperson at the opening speech.
"The current situation in Libya is extremely serious for Libya itself and for the region as whole... the fate of the people of Libya whose protection must be ensured, and the AU very much attached to ensuring the protection of the people as enshrined in its constitutive act," said the chairperson.
It was noted on the occasion that the meeting is a follow up meeting of the ad hoc committee which was held on March 19, 2011, in Nouakchott, Mauritania.
He said concerted effort is crucial to bring about lasting solution to the crisis in Libya. It is incumbent on the Libyan people to find the solution," said Jean Ping.
The AU PSC looks forward to the outcome of the meeting being held here in Addis Ababa, said the AU in a statement. Jean Ping highlighted on a concerted effort of all to solve the problem in Libya.
