The state run radio Mogadishu broadcasted that al Shabaab disarmed Sheikh, Hassan Dahir Aweys, after his group was routed in Lower Jubba region in southern Somalia.
Mohamed Osman Arus, the spokesman of Hizbul Islam told radio Mogadishu they handed over their military vehicles and rifles to al Shabaab, but he did not say whether they would join al Shabaab or not.
Arus says their leader Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys is now a normal person and was not a politician any longer.
The two groups fought in Lower Jubba region and also the regional capital city of Kismayo several times. Al Shabaab has recently taken over several towns including the border town of Dhobley from Hizbul Islam.
There is no independent news clarifying the news of disarmament of Hizbul Islam leader Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys.
