Mogadishu (RBC) Nearly eight civilians were killed and six others were wounded after heavy shelling targeted civilian populated areas in the Somalia’s capital of Mogadishu on Monday.
The shelling from African Union mission (AMISOM) military bases in Mogadishu came after fresh gun battle started in the Hodan district between the transitional federal government forces backing by Amisom troops and Al Shabab rebel group.
The gun battle started at early morning of Monday after Al Shabab fighters attacked military barracks of Amisom forces.
Health official from Mogadishu ambulance service, Ali Muse Sheikh told RBC Radio that six injured civilians were rushed to several hospitals for treatment including Dayniile and Keysaney hospitals.
Heavy artillery weapons fired into the city centre were heard as the roars of bullets can sometimes be heard. The villages targeted mostly in the centre and north of the city under Al Shabab’s control.
The artillery shelling which lasted late in the afternoon also hit Bakaro market which the main commercial centre of the capital, locals told RBC Radio.
Officials of Somali government have been repeatedly saying that allied Amisom forces are targeting Al Shabab military near Wershadaha road and Bakaro market suburbs.
Today’s shelling comes as calm was returning in the capital after several days of intense fighting between fighters of the insurgent group of Al Shabab, and peacekeepers from the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) backing Somali government forces.
