Mombasa port not for privatization - Uhuru
NAIROBI - Kenya’s President-elect Uhuru Kenyatta has moved to assure Kenyans and especially communities in Coast Province that the port of Mombasa will not be privatized.
The President--elect who is in office pending the outcome of an election petition filed by his main rival Raila Odinga appeared to contradict his predecessor Mwai Kibaki who has time and again called for the privatization of the port to increase efficiency.
Uhuru’s sentiments will not go down well with officials from the regional economies that depend on the port of Mombasa, most of whom are agitating for the privatization of the port and the expansion of membership to include shareholders across the region.
Just a couple of months ago, leading Ugandan business people demanded to have a stake in the port on the account that their revenues for a huge chunk of the ports income.
“We do not plan to privatize this port.
We will improve efficiency and convert it into a world-class facility,” said Uhuru.
