African Union representative to Somalia announces resignation

June 19, 2014
Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission for Somalia Mahamat Saleh Annadif announced his resignation from his post on Wednesday (June 18th) in private meetings with the Somali leaders.
Annadif, who has held the post since November 2012, will step down on July 2, 2014.
He praised the Somali leaders for their role in the political and security progress that the country has made, and thanked the countries contributing troops to the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and international partners for their support.
"As I leave Somalia, I am impressed by your determination to bring sustainable peace and stability to your country," he said, according to a press release from AMISOM. "I am particularly happy to note that the Horn of African nation is currently enjoying its longest period of relative peace since 1991 and that through your leadership, we have of late witnessed amicable resolution of disputes amongst various different groups."
"As we have witnessed in many other African countries, the problems of Somalia will ultimately come to an end and this Horn of Africa nation will reclaim its position within the continent and beyond," he added.
Annadif's deputy, Lydia Wanyoto Mutende, will assume his role until the AU appoints a replacement.
