Why Museveni is still the best option for Uganda

PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni was recently awarded a doctorate by Makerere University for his heroic contribution to this country and the Great Lakes region. When receiving the doctorate, Museveni narrated a story that Ugandans should reflect on.

He said he received $50,000 (about sh120m) from former Tanzanian president Julius Nyerere in August 1971 to launch a guerilla war against former Ugandan president Idi Amin.

That amount of money would tempt many youth to engage in other activities rather than risk their life with liberation activities. But Museveni embarked on the war — risky as it was and as young as he was. Even when the war project looked hopeless with its initial failure where his colleagues were killed and many executed by firing squad, especially during the 1972 invasion, Museveni did not give up on the liberation of the country.

And prior to that, he had travelled to Mozambique as a student at Dar-es-Salaam University to acquaint himself with liberation movements while his colleagues enjoyed themselves. Read More
