Nine people carrying an array of weapons were arrested last week in Lamu by Kenyan detectives.

The nine were suspected to be al Shabaab members and were Monday morning taken to Coast CID headquarters for questioning before being arraigned in court.

Among the weapons seized were a rocket launcher, two rocket-propelled grenades, seven AK-47 rifles, a Tokalev pistol, seven ammunition pouches and 361 rounds of ammunition.

Coast provincial police boss Leo Nyongesa Monday said the suspects were arrested in Kipini. Their weapons were found buried on the beach.
Mr Nyongesa said there was a communication barrier between the police and the men from war torn Somalia.

The suspects were taken to Mombasa on Thursday night under tight security and are being held at Port Police Station.

Detectives have been deployed to the Kenyan border to beef up security and check the number of illegal immigrants entering Kenya from Somalia.

“We have intensified security on our borders from Malindi, Lamu to Kiunga following the increasing number of terror suspects,” said Nyongesa.
