The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) have started going through the applications for the position of Chief Justice.
As the JSC deadline reached on Friday, July 8, fourteen lawyers had expressed their interests to succeed Willy Mutunga as the head of the judiciary.
Some of the applicants are Justice Alnashir Visram, Lady Justice Roselyne Nambuye, Justice Mbogholi Msagha, Prof. Makau Mutua, Justice Smokin Wanjala, David Waihi and former anti-corruption commission boss Justice Aaron Ringera.
Out of the 14 applicants, a lot of attention has been on the law professor Makau Mutua.

One of the reasons is because of his persistent harsh criticism of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration.
“If made CJ, Makau Mutua could ‘refuse’ to swear Uhuru as president in 2017. He has told us that he does not recognise Uhuru as president,” said political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi.
Another reason why there is a lot of focus on Makau Mutua is because of his curriculum vitae.
The former dean of Buffalo Law School in The State University of New York has one of the longest CVs in the world – 84 pages.
“In terms of academic documents, gravitas scholarship, legal theory… I don’t there will be no candidate who will come even close to Makau Mutua,” said Senior Counsel Ahmednasir Abdullahi.
Mutua got his first law degree at the University of Nairobi before going for masters at the University of Dar es Salaam.
He also has a Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD) from Harvard Law School.
