– He collapsed during his morning training session and was rushed to the hospital but died on arrival
A Japan based Kenyan elite athlete died on Thursday morning, July 21, after having breakfast at a friend’s house in Nyahururu.
Maina had driven himself to Nyahururu to meet his colleagues.
Johana Maina, 26, had returned to the country two days prior and collapsed during his morning training and was rushed to the Charity Medical Clinic in Nyahururu town.
According to Citizen, he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Conflicting reports had it that he collapsed after breakfast while others reported that he collapsed during a training session.

“He was in a good mood and healthy after he came back from Japan,” said Moses Kirua, the Nyandarua Athletics Kenya Public Relations Officer.
His body is lying at the Nyahururu County Referral Hospital mortuary.
Maina won the 2012 and 2014 Sendai Half Marathon and ran his personal best time of 2:13:46 when he finished 15th at the 2014 Fukuoka International Open Marathon Championship.
Maina was one of the brothers-in-law of Bedan Karoki, a 10,000m runner who is scheduled to participate in the Rio 2016 Olympics.

According to Citizen, Karoki braved the loss to travel to Nairobi to receive the Kenyan flag from President Uhuru Kenyatta with the rest of the Olympics squad.
