N'DJAMENA, March 4 (Reuters) - All five Chadian opposition candidates said on Friday they will boycott an April 3 presidential poll if their request for new secure voters cards and registration lists is rejected by the government.
A joint statement signed by all five candidates seen by Reuters, said if their demands were not met, Chad's incumbent President Idriss Deby will be going to the poll alone again for his fourth term in office.
Chad's major opposition parties boycotted a 2006 presidential election saying conditions had not been met to hold free and fair vote in the landlocked petrol producing Central African state.
This time, the opposition leaders said their demands are aimed at setting conditions for a smooth vote after several problems were recorded during a Feb. 13 legislative poll, won by Deby and his allies.
"Voter registration cards were printed on a single or double page for example, this made it easy for the cards to be falsified because our representatives did not monitor the printing process," said Ngarledji Yorongar, one the candidates.
Deby has survived years of rebellion in the east, where analysts say fighters were backed by neighbouring Sudan until a warming of relations between the two countries led to their proxy conflict petering out.
