The issue of Somali pirates holding Indians hostage rocked the Lok Sabha on Wednesday as the Opposition BJP accused the government of showing “helplessness” on the issue and staged a walkout. Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj said that the Somali pirates had set a deadline till Wednesday for the execution of eight Indian sailors and demanded to know what the government was doing for their release.
“When even one US national gets into trouble in another country, the US moves heaven and earth to secure his release. Why is it that our children are made to wear anklets at Tri-Valley University, fishermen are killed by Sri Lankan Navy, and a tiny country like Somalia cocks a snook at a big country like us and holds our people hostage? Our response is such that nobody is taking us seriously. I would first like to know what the government is doing to secure their release,” she said, demanding that External Affairs Minister S M Krishna should give a statement on this issue immediately.
