The EU confirmed its continued support for the Djibouti peace process, which remains the framework for peace building and stability in Somalia.he European Union (EU) on Monday expressed a deep concern over the political, security and humanitarian situations in Somalia, including the increasing number of displaced Somalis.
Meeting in Brussels, the EU's Council of Foreign affairs said in a statement that Somalia’s instability "represents a growing challenge not only for the security of the people in Somalia but also for the region and the rest of the world through terrorism, piracy and the proliferation of weapons."
The EU confirmed its continued support for the Djibouti peace process, which remains the framework for peace building and stability in Somalia. The council said it was "imperative" that the Transitional Federal Institutions (TFIs) demonstrate unity, common purpose and determination "to advance in this incremental and all-inclusive process."
EU also expressed regret about the unilateral decision by Somalia's transitional federal parliament (TFP) to extend its mandate by three years.
The EU said it expects the TFIs to use any such period to "advance reconciliation, security and justice and to develop minimum levels of governance" to allow a more transparent management of revenue and the provision of basic services. Future support to the Somali government, including stipends for parliamentarians, would be contingent on progress on reform and delivery of the transitional tasks, the organization said.
Separately, the council adopted a recommendation by the EU's foreign affairs chief, Catherine Ashton, urging all European nations to cooperate in the development of security in the Sahel countries. The EU said it would help the countries of Mali, Mauritania and Niger combat militancy and practice good governance and the rule of law.
