LONDON -- Britain's Defense Secretary says a small British diplomatic team is in eastern Libya to try to talk to rebels there.
Liam Fox declined to comment on reports that members of a special forces unit were being held by rebel forces after a secret mission to put British diplomats in touch with leading opponents of Moammar Gadhafi went awry.
"We are in touch with them but it would be inappropriate for me to comment further on that for reasons I am sure you will understand," Fox told BBC radio Sunday.
The Sunday Times newspaper reported that up to eight soldiers were captured as they escorted a junior British diplomat through rebel-held territory in eastern Libya.
