A man in Nyamira County went berserk on Thursday evening, slaughtering his two children before an angry mob lynched him in return.
The incident, which occurred in Bobondo, West Mugirango constituency, left many baffled.
Bugesi Okero, 25, is said to have separated from his wife Rebecca six months ago and had been living alone with the children, a daughter, 5, and son, 3.
“I got a call from a neighbour that all was not well at home. On reaching our village, I found the children’s father trying to run away. He was, however, overpowered by angry villagers, who killed him and set his body ablaze,” Richard Tai, the lynched man's brother, told Nation.co.ke.
He said his brother had been behaving strangely in recent days, adding that he had demolished their late parents’ houses in unclear circumstances.
“We have been trying to reconcile him with his runaway wife in vain. We don’t know why he chased her away,” added Mr Tai.
Nyamira South OCPD Riko Ngare, who arrived at the scene shortly after the incident, expressed his shock but urged members of the public not to take the law into their own hands.
Police took the bodies to the Nyamira Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary.
