Somalia: Fighting kills five in Luuq district




At least five people have been killed and dozens injured in fighting between Ahlu Sunna Wal Jamaa alongside local pro-government forces and Al Shabaab radical militias in southern Somalia on Thursday.

“Al-Shabab militias attacked local pro-government forces and Ahlu Sunna Wal Jamaa Islamists vehicles at Kured village in outskirts of Luuq district in Gedo region,” a witness who requested to be unnamed told Garowe Online on phone.

He adds face-to-face fighting broke out and both sides used heavy machine guns, mortars shell that caused the death of five from the warring sides.

Gedo region governor, Mohamed Abdi Kaliil told the press that unknown militias attacked their forces in Luuq District of Gedo Region, but residents confirmed to Garowe Online that Al Shabaab attacked Ahlu Sunna Wal Jamaa and Local pro-government forces in the outskirts of Luuq district in Gedo Region.

On Wednesday Ahlu Sunna Wal Jamaa and local pro-government forces seized Garabaharey district in Gedo region, the town was under the control of Al Shabaab extremist militias since 2009.
