SOMALIA: Lawmakers bring in motion against the speaker

By: Abdalle Ahmed
Mogadishu (RBC) The lawmakers of Somalia parliament introduced on Monday a motion against their speaker Sharif Hassan Sheikh Adan as the rift between President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed and speaker widens.
One hundred MPs from the parliament met in Mogadishu yesterday have presented the motion in which they suggested to fire the speaker alleging power abuse and breaking the law.
“We have signed the motion and will be brought in the parliament session as soon”, lawmaker Khadija Mohamed Dirie said.
In the draft of the motion obtained by RBC Radio impeaches the speaker over his attendance in UN-backed Nairobi meeting on Somalia which the transitional federal government rejected.
“He is going to bring the conspiracy agreement of Nairobi meeting in the parliament and we will not accept it”, Mrs. Dirie added.
“We do not only need to fire him also to sue him”, other legislator Ismail Ahmed said.
The motion against Somalia parliament speaker comes days before parliament meeting is due to open in Mogadishu.
The conflict between the president and the speaker intensified since parliament extension term of three years was issued in February which the president refused to sign.
President Sharif with the backing of the prime minister also boycotted UN consultative meeting held in Nairobi this month but the speaker attended.
