– When presiding over a graduation at Daystar University where he had been invited as the chief guest- the deputy president commited an academic blunder
– Despite the fact that he has presented his thesis to his supervisors at the University of Nairobi, the deputy president is not permitted to wear a doctoral gown even by the virtue of his office
– Academic critics on social media have attacked the second in command for wearing a doctoral gown while he is just a mere masters degree holder
Earlier in the week, the deputy president, William Ruto, was photographed- donning a doctoral  gown while presiding over a graduation ceremony at one of Kenya’s local universities.
Immediately, the whole of Kenya social media fanfare went wild. Congratulatory messages were flung, from down  the countryside Bomet, to Kenya’s capital, Nairobi.  His academic qualifications impressed everyone- and the fact that, despite his busy schedule, he is working on his PhD!
I mean, who knew, that Kenya’s Deputy President WillIam Ruto had enough time left in his busy schedule to attend classes for his PhD?

Far from the blithering. It was Ruto wearing the doctoral gown that has not gone down well with the Kenyan league of academicians who feel that the deputy president, committed an embarrassing academic crime.
Even as the chief guest, it was wrong for the deputy president to don the doctoral gown while he is only a master’s degree holder. To follow protocol, he would have donned a master’s degree gown, because that’s where he stands at the moment.

It was for this reason that the former president, Daniel Arap Moi, would be awarded an honorary degree by every newly established University before he could preside over their graduation ceremony.
On Tuesday, June 14, 2016,  Ruto presented  his thesis on ‘The impact of human activities on riparian reserves at Saiwa Swamp, Trans Nzoia County’ to the director of the  School of Biological Sciences at the University of Nairobi.
The deputy president graduated with a degree in Botany and Zoology from the University of Nairobi in 1990.
